Passionate about the natural environment in all its forms, expert at delivering nature based solutions. Director with RSK Habitat Management.

As we see June rolling away I find myself on the early train to London to join my colleagues at the #2024CIEEM awards where were nominated for our work on wetland habitat creation alongside the RSPB and I reflect on what a month its been. RSK Habitat Management has delivered works across many sites with summer maintenance in full flow, #invasive species work progressing well on other sites and in partnership with W Crowder & Sons Ltd we are still delivering #treeplanting through their cell grown tree stocks. Alongside our ADAS colleagues we have attended Flood and Coast exhibition where we met hundreds of friends old and new showcasing the wider works of the RSK Group in that sector with some exciting projects to be delivered this summer and into the Autumn. Working with Adrian Calder and his team we've been at #RailLive showcasing the wide range of services offered and showing off some of our remote controlled plant alongside our sister companies RSK Biocensus Structural Soils to name just two. The final event for July took us to #HillHead2024 to meet and chat with our quarrying customers and marvel at some amazing machines on display. Its been a busy month for many of our teams but behind all this is a shout out to all our amazing support staff. These team players often don't get the recognition they deserve but like all companies they are the backbone and engine room of any business, ask yourself where would we be without them quietly organising us, ensuring the machines are in the right place, suppliers are sorted, payroll delivered the list is endless. So whilst were all busy galloping into a weekend and another month ahead, lets celebrate our admin teams, you know who you are, we would all be much worse off without you!

When developing land, it's crucial to consider the impact on local wildlife, particularly protected species such as the badger. The Protection of Badgers Act 1992 safeguards badgers and their setts, making it an offence to damage, destroy, or obstruct access to a badger sett. Including activities that would disturb a badger occupying a sett. This can include using heavy machinery anywhere near the sett as some of the tunnels can extend 20m+ from the entrance. RSK Habitat Management has extensive experience in managing badger populations and mitigating their impacts, while ensuring their welfare. Our experience ranges from vaccinations and fencing to creating new setts and closing existing ones. Our team has been at the forefront of this work for many years. If your land surveys indicate the presence of badger setts, development can still proceed with professional support. RSK Habitat Management, along with their RSK ADAS LIMITED and RSK Biocensus colleagues, can assist you in navigating the necessary steps, including obtaining plans, licenses, and conducting mitigation work on-site. Our key points to consider are: ·       Licenses: You may need a license from Natural England for any proposed sett or hole closures. ·       Artificial Setts: If a main breeding sett is identified, an artificial sett may be required. This needs to be built well in advance to allow badgers time to relocate. ·       Disturbance Period: The period for licensed disturbance of existing setts is from July to the end of November. For assistance with licenses or on-site support, contact RSK Habitat Management to ensure compliance and reduce delays to your project program.

Dodging the rain, planning the next phase of peatland restoration works for RSK Habitat Management in Dorset. Fantastic to catch a glimpse of a nightjar, and always nice to see an abundance of bog asphodel peaking through. Plenty of sphagnum and round leaved sundew already here too. Bring on the autumn! #wetlandwednesday #peatland #restoration #carboncapture

🌿 Exciting News! 🌿 We are thrilled to announce that RSK Habitat Management, in collaboration with the RSPB, has been nominated for the CIEEM 'Best Practice - Small Scale Conservation' award! This recognition highlights our joint efforts on the Titchwell Marsh ‘Life on the Edge’ project. The project has enhanced biodiversity and strengthened the resilience of this vital habitat against climate change 🦋 • Restoration of 29 hectares of freshwater marsh and reedbed. • Creation of 13 new islands for breeding and wintering birds, including the UK’s first islands designed for spoonbills. • Significant improvements in water management and habitat quality, leading to record breeding seasons for avocets, bitterns, and bearded tits. A huge thank you to everyone involved, especially our partners at the Titchwell Marsh RSPB Reserve, your hard work and passion make achievements like this possible 💚 #Conservation #Biodiversity #CIEEMAwards #RSKHabitatManagement #RSPB #TitchwellMarsh #Ecology #ClimateChange

🌍 Reflecting on World Peatlands Day 🌍 Yesterday was World Peatlands Day; a moment to recognise the often overlooked value of these incredibly important wetland environments and the negative impact human activity has had on them. In the UK, over 80% of our peatlands have been lost completely, heavily modified, or are actively being drained and degraded. Our remaining peatlands are vulnerable to climate change and the survival of many species that depend on these habitats is threatened as a result. It also reduces their ability to act as 'carbon sinks'. By restoring wetland environments such as peatland we can increase our resiliance to extreme rainfall events, help rare and protected species thrive, and enable them to sequester carbon from the atmosphere once again. It's time to change the way we view our wetlands and make Nature Based Solutions the default 💚 💦 🌿 🕷 RSK Habitat Management #WorldPeatlandsDay #PeatlandRestoration #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #Sustainability #Wetlands
