Meet Lauren Cusworth, one of our Forensic Psychologists in Training (FPiT) based at HMP & YOI Doncaster. Lauren recently attended the British Psychological Society Division of Forensic Psychology Conference with some of her colleagues in support of her #professionaldevelopment. Here are Lauren's key takeaways: ✔️ I learnt what we could do better as practitioners. The emphasis was on improving the quality of the services we provide. The talks encouraged a lot of reflection on my role as a practitioner and the establishment that I work in. ✔️ Presentations covered trauma, stalking and reintegration. These are very different yet very interesting topics. A particular favourite of mine was listening to the talk on the trauma of release from prison. I'm involved in work to understand the 'recall' population at the prison so I found it insightful. The recall population are those returned to prison for breaching their release conditions. ✔️ I enjoyed the talk focused on the experiences of an autistic male convicted of stalking. I hadn’t considered the perspective they were taking and found the talk emotive. ✔️ I have a personal interest in those identifying as ‘incels’. I took the opportunity to listen to a presentation exploring their attitudes. It was surprising as the research findings were not what I expected them to be. It provided me with lots of consideration to think about.    💭 Lauren's overall reflections were: "The keynote speaker on the integration of technology within the prison system was fascinating. At HMP Doncaster, we've introduced in-cell technology. This is a step towards making prisons more compatible with technology. I want to see this develop further and learn how 'smart' prisons could improve the UK prison system. "It was great to see so many like-minded professionals come together to discuss innovative areas of research in our field. Everyone was sharing learnings to help develop and improve delivery as a collective." #DFP2024 #SercoPsychologicalServices #ImpactABetterFuture #FuturePsychologist Natalie Parrett | Graham Blair | Mark Hanson | Mark Whittaker

Our Chief Executive Officer Jerry Moloney and Mike Green, the Chief Executive of the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), recently visited our latest modular buildings, which will provide transient accommodation to 120 military personnel. They were able to see how we delivered the project at pace, from gathering requirements, to a formal handover in just twenty months. And this included a five-month wait to obtain the planning permission needed. The image on the right shows the completed building. This is one of three similar projects we are currently delivering across the Built Estate central and southwest regions where we look after facilities management on behalf of DIO. Jerry (on the left of Mike in the picture of the two) said “We’re proud that we’ve been able to demonstrate agility and deliver such an important major project. Our teams have worked hard to meet the challenge and scale our capability to match our customer’s needs while improving the lived experience for military personnel.” The two new modular buildings include storage facilities for equipment, laundry and drying facilities, and are built to provide Net Carbon Zero building performance. This is helped by the fact that the buildings do not use gas fuel, have air source heat pumps and solar panels on the roofs, harvest rainwater and use smart building technology to monitor and cut energy use. Mike added: "This project is a fantastic demonstration of overcoming challenges through a fully collaborative working approach. Quality accommodation has been delivered to a high standard, that aligns to DIO’s sustainability intent, meets the customer's needs and will make a big difference for the personnel that use it. " We have delivered these modular buildings through close partnership working with DIO and Strategic Command. In addition, we have worked closely with our Supply Chain Partners, Reds10, COLLINS DESIGN AND BUILD LIMITED and Owen Pell Ltd. Well done to all involved! It was great to showcase the crucial construction and refurbishment work we are undertaking across the Built Estate. #military #partnership #ProjectManagement #sustainability#NetZero #FacilitiesManagement #innovation #ThinkSustainableDelivery #LivedExperience

📚 This #NationalBookLoversDay we’re celebrating our amazing volunteers who provide one-to-one online reading support for UK children’s literacy charity, Chapter One UK In the last academic year, our online reading volunteers have: ✅ Provided 85.2 hours of reading ✅ Participated in 182 reading sessions ✅ Supported 11 children to develop their literacy skills ✅ Contributed to improving the confidence of the children they have helped – 87% of teachers believed children were more confident with their reading having attended Chapter One sessions. (Chapter One, Annual Survey 2023) 📖 Chapter One has reached over 2600 children this academic year in over 95 schools in 11 areas across the country. 💬 “The children on the Chapter One programme are children who rarely, if ever read at home. The programme has helped to close the reading/learning gap between children that do read at home and those that don’t.” Teacher, Annual Survey 2022-23. 💬 Serco’s Social Impact Manager, Lulu Hobbs is one of the volunteers, “I really enjoy volunteering with Chapter One and look forward to my session every week! “To see how much the child I read with has progressed over the academic year, and to be able to develop a lovely rapport has been amazing, and I have learnt quite a bit myself! “I have learnt all about phonics, but along with that I have learnt more about how I communicate, and my softer skills, which I will take into my professional role.” #SocialValue #ChildrensLiteracy #Reading #ImpactABetterFuture #Volunteering

The National Space Operations Centre and RAF Fylingdales monitored the break-up of the Chinese Long March 6A rocket earlier this week.   UK Space Command and the UK Space Agency are monitoring the debris to assess any potential risks to UK satellites.

    • The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation launched a Long March 6A at 0742 (British Summer Time) on Tuesday 6 August 2024 from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in the People’s Republic of China

The rocket carried 18 communications satellites for the G60 constellation operated by Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology

Commercial Space Domain Awareness providers are reporting multiple new pieces of debris following the break-up of the Long March 6A rocket body. Current estimations are 50+ objects in the debris cloud

The National Space Operations Centre and RAF Fylingdales also detected this event and are currently analysing the debris to determine implications, and will continue to monitor these objects to assess the potential hazards to UK satellites.
