Dr Iftikhar Hussain (Senior Lecturer in Economics at the University of Sussex Business School) is a specialist in education economics and he contributed to the Department for Education consultation which led to the decision to scrap single-word Ofsted judgements. Dr Iftikhar Hussain discusses his research and explains the issues with Ofsted inspections, and the lack of evidence that they improve teaching standards. In the news story, he says: "It is staggering that despite the wealth of data being collected by the Department for Education on individual children's educational performance very wide gaps in our knowledge persist. To be sure, there is a lot of qualitative evidence, but nothing quantitative on basic questions such as whether or not children gain more from enrolling in schools rated more positively by inspectors." University of Sussex Business School alum Jon McGlashan (International Business, 2014) is the Co-founder and Managing Director of BubbleLife Ltd, a company which offers a sustainable alternative to liquid soap packaging. After working in the music and hospitality industry, Jon decided he wanted a change in his career path and came to Sussex in 2014 to study International Business BSc, and then went on to complete an MSc in Project Management in 2018. Jon was asked how his undergraduate degree helped him on his journey to become an entrepreneur, he said: "Without my degree I would not have known where to start with my business. It gave me the knowledge to write my business plan, create the financials for the business and develop our marketing strategy." Jon was also asked why he decided to do a Masters and how that helped with his career, he replied: "After my undergraduate degree, I was still unsure what I wanted to do next. I knew I wanted to start my own business, but I was not confident I had the organisational skills needed to do so. I came across the MSc Project Management course and thought it would be a great way to improve my skills whilst also gaining a useful qualification that would improve my employment prospects. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It was while studying for my Masters that I met Carolina and we entered the Start-up Sussex Social Impact Prize, which gave us the initial funding needed to start our BubbleLife journey." "UK government may need to revisit the National Semiconductor Strategy to guard against potential supply chain disruptions and succeed in nurturing a successful domestic semiconductor ecosystem for the future." A forthcoming report from a group of academics, including Steve Rolf (Research Fellow at the Digital Futures at Work Research Centre (Digit) at the Business School) and Julian Germann (Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Sussex), will urge the government to revise its strategy once again, this time based on an up-to-date and systematic survey of the semiconductor industry it is advised to carry out. "The authors, from the University of Sussex and King's College London, say that both the US and EU have invested in detailed mappings of semiconductor supply chains in order to inform their policies."
