Among the world's top-tier (top ~20%) #AI researchers/scientists, nearly half were college-educated in China, but nearly half work in the U.S. More info below: I recently came across MacroPolo's work tracking global AI talent. They focus on authors of papers accepted to NeurIPS, one of the most selective AI conferences on record. Their 2023 update is based on a random selection of papers accepted to the late-2022 conference. High-level observations/thoughts: - #USA, #China, and #Europe / #UK continue to dominate the global talent pipeline. Among those, China is a leading launchpad (by undergraduate institution) but the U.S. ultimately (post-grad work) "cleans up". This is no surprise to me, given the global leadership position of U.S. graduate programs & research institutions (e.g. Stanford, MIT) and tech giants (e.g. Google, Microsoft, Meta, OpenAI). - However, the U.S. has slipped, from 65% share of top-20% AI talent in 2019 to 57% share in 2022. This is probably good for the world in some ways (since innovation & data should not be monopolized), but as an American citizen and as a believer in democracy over autocracy, I would like to see the U.S. stay in the lead. How: evolve/elevate K-12 STEM education; ease up on the political assault on higher education institutions and the tech industry; overhaul immigration for high-skilled workers (more visas, faster processing times). - Not in the talent report itself, but regarding #Vietnam: a search of NeurIPS for "Nguyen" (the most common Vietnamese last name) yielded 3,630 results. This seems impressive to me, especially considering potential linguistic and cultural friction in the talent pipeline (i.e. converting from great K-12 STEM learning in Vietnamese to peer-reviewed English-language academic research). For comparison, a search for "Smith" (the most common English last name, albeit without nearly as high a share as Nguyen) yielded 4,020 results. - That said, I don't think "top-tier AI researcher" talent pool is perfectly 1:1 correlated with "top-tier AI entrepreneur" talent pool. Building a multi-billion-dollar company in AI doesn't necessarily require bleeding edge academic research. In fact, arguably the steady drumbeat of open releases makes a lot of the tech a commodity. Rather, there are other factors as well: productization (i.e. applying AI in a way that individuals and enterprises can use effectively), distribution (i.e. getting the product in the hands of customers effectively), and general capital availability & efficiency (i.e. getting money and using it wisely) are important. --> This points to specific strategies for others to get a slice of the global AI pie. Check out more of their data and commentary here: https://lnkd.in/gH3JFD4c Other thoughts/observations?
