The ASUS Zenfone 2 was one of the more talked about smartphones of 2015. At least in its price range, which was under $300. The ASUS Zenfone 2 was one of the few to feature an Intel chipset as well, and actually perform quite well. ASUS is in the process of getting their Android 6.0 Marshmallow update ready to roll out to the masses.

ASUS has confirmed that these devices will be getting the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow: ASUS PadFone S, ZenFone 2 (ZE550ML, ZE551ML), ZenFone 2 Deluxe, ZenFone 2 Deluxe Special Edition, ZenFone 2 Laser (ZE500KG, ZE500KL, ZE551KL, ZE600KL, ZE601KL), ZenFone Selfie, ZenFone Max and the ZenFone Zoom. That’s basically all of their devices launched in the past year to year and a half.  With the update, ASUS is looking to get rid of some of their bloatware and instead default to some Google apps. One of the major complaints with the ASUS ZenFone 2 was the amount of bloat on the device. Hopefully that should change with the Marshmallow update. While some of the bloat will be disappearing, not everything will.

According to ASUS, Google’s Gmail, Calendar and Messenger apps will be included. While ASUS’ Messenger, Mail and Calendar will be eliminated from the devices with the update. However, ASUS notes that you’ll need to do a factory reset for the apps to completely disappear. They also note that their apps will still be available in the Play Store, should you decide you still want them.

ASUS still is quoting the time frame of Q2 for these updates to begin rolling out. Believe it or not, Q2 isn’t that far away as it starts April 1st. The update seems to be taking longer than anyone would like for it too, but at least it’s coming. Updates like this are always subject to delays. Especially considering the fact that there needs to be testing and certification done, both with Google and ASUS. Luckily most of these are unlocked devices, so the carriers don’t stand in our way in terms of updates rolling out. As usual, when these updates do begin to start rolling out to these devices, we’ll be sure to update you.
