Play Overview
Five Nights at Freddy's: Into the Pit (2024) is a stealth adventure game where you must rescue your dad from a serial killer. By using a ball pit time machine, you go between the present and the past to gather items and clues, all while evading the killer, malfunctioning robots, and your own illusions. While it's a bizarre concept, the time-travelling ball pit enables novel problem-solving solutions as you use items from the past to help you in the present.
The game is a retelling of the Five Nights at Freddy's novella Into the Pit. You play Oswald, a young boy tired of his boring life in a run-down town. One day, when your dad leaves you in a pizza place to eat, you find a ball bit in the back room that sends you back in time, to when the restaurant was Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Your dad gets kidnapped and replaced by a rabbit-costumed serial killer from the past, but no one else can tell, and it's up to you to travel through time to save him and stop the killer from doing more harm.
Play involves moving between different locations to collect items you can use to help rescue your dad. Travelling to the pizzeria lets you change between time periods to get the items you need, and even to get the same items but in a different state. For example, you may need an item that's rusted in the present day, but pristine in the past. In some places, you're hunted by the killer and must hide from him, using sounds to distract him and taking a different route to escape. Depending on what you do there are different endings available, and figuring out how to get each one is part of the fun.
The result is a game that leans more heavily on the horror tone than other games in the franchise, yet still retains its classically convoluted yet satisfying puzzle-box storytelling. While not suitable for younger fans, for older players, it's a tense game that uses novel time-travel manipulation to craft engaging puzzles with clever solutions to be discovered.
