Play OverviewPlay Overview

Journey Beyond the Edge of the World is a retro-inspired narrative game where you wake up alone at sea and gradually uncover the story of your boat and its lost crew. Your task is to find and piece together the items you find to solve puzzles and stay afloat, the twist is that you can travel through portals to different times in the boat’s voyage. It stands out for its atmospheric three-dimensional audio and narrated music tracks, unfolding the story much like an audiobook.

You play the sole survivor of a secretive voyage of MS Constance in 1953 and awake with no memory of who you are or how you ended up on the boat. To unlock each narrated chapter of the mysterious story you must complete increasingly difficult puzzles such as repairing leaks or rigging ropes. By exploring the ship you find items that help you solve these puzzles like a winch you can clip onto several places on the hull. Sometimes you’ll have to combine multiple items for them to be useful.

As you progress to new chapters, you open portals through time that lead to different moments in the voyage where you see other crew-mates as ghost-like memories. Different times have different stormy weather conditions and items on board, presenting a new version of the boat to explore in each chapter. With practice, you learn to use spatial audio to focus on specific sounds and discover hidden memories outside the main story.

The result is an atmospheric sailing game with a dream-like twist where you experience the story through sound as much as sight. The narrative explores ideas of loss, hope and acceptance of past decisions.
