Delhi zoo set to receive hornbills from Assam

The Capital will receive the hornbills in exchange for four black bucks — a trade-off approved by the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC), the officials said

The animal exchange was finalised and approved by MoEFCC on March 25, and is likely to be completed over the next fortnight. (HT)

LG clears walkability plans for Purana Qila, Pragati Maidan, Delhi zoo

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has approved walkability plans for areas around Purana Qila, Pragati Maidan, and Delhi zoo. The plans aim to reduce traffic congestion and improve pedestrian and cycling facilities. Saxena also cleared multi-modal integration plans for three Delhi Metro stations. Additionally, the construction of two railway overbridges and one railway underbridge in outer Delhi was approved to ease traffic congestion.

After 18 years, 2 Royal Bengal tiger cubs born in Delhi zoo

On May 4, the tigress Siddhi gave birth to five cubs. While two of them survived, three were stillborn.

Delhi zoo plans to get female ostrich from Southern India

Delhi Zoo Director Sonali Ghosh said, "Interestingly, the ostrich we have got from Chandigarh zoo belongs to the same clutch of eggs we have here. There were not enough female ostrich. Now we have to find female ostrich for them. Covid-19 has slowed down the entire process, but we will do it."

Winged guests make an early entrance at Delhi zoo

Almost 140 painted storks have already arrived, zoo officials said, adding that the water bodies in the zoo are full of the winged creatures with long, yellow beaks. “By the end of August, the numbers may reach more than 500,” said Pandey.

Delhi zoo to reopen for visitors from August 1

Zoo officials said the two shifts will be from 8am to 12pm and from 1pm to 5pm.

During the brief period it was opened in April, the zoo had allowed only 2,000 visitors -- 1,000 in each shift -- in the premises.(ANI)

NCRTC ropes in experts to study impact of underground rail corridor on Delhi zoo

The NCRTC has asked experts from the Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI) to do an assessment to gauge the impact of the vibration caused by the trains running underground as well as the construction work.

An expert said animals are far more sensitive to vibrations than humans, and if an alternate alignment of the corridor is possible, then it should be considered.(PTI)

Delhi zoo to open with Covid-19 precautions

"We opened the website ticket sale at 8am on Wednesday. Around 5pm, there were over 50 bookings," Delhi zoo director Ramesh Kumar Pandey said.

Delhi zoo reports first bird flu death, doubles down on safety measures

Environment ministry officials confirmed that with the positive case at Delhi zoo, safety protocol at the premises had been intensified. The only solace this time, as compared to the last avian flu breakout at the zoo in 2016, is that this time the zoo is already closed for the general public.

Bengal tiger Bittu breathes his last at Delhi zoo; new tigress arrives from Kanpur

Zoo officials said Bittu was not keeping well for the past few months and died at 9.25am Thursday. Delhi zoo director Ramesh Pandey said Bittu was brought from Van Vihar Zoo, Bhopal, in 2014 and had completed his average life span of 15 years.
