Punjab rice millers to protest if AGA not adopted

Cereal stocks swell, wheat procurement crosses 24MT

The Food Corporation of India has purchased over 24 million tonnes of wheat, surpassing the cereal stock threshold necessary for India's food security requirements. The government will continue to buy wheat in an open-ended manner, with an estimated procurement of 34 million tonnes this year. The combined stock position of wheat and rice in state-owned granaries is now well above 55 million tonnes, putting the country in a comfortable position.

Haryana set to miss its wheat procurement target this year

As per information, government agencies in Haryana had earlier predicted to procure 85 lakh MT of wheat but later after consultation with states, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) estimated that Haryana’s wheat procurement target for this season is set to be 75 lakh MT.

Wheat arrival picks up in Punjab mandis

Punjab's wheat arrival this season is far behind last year's at 15.05 lakh tonnes due to rain, hailstorms and wind damage. The state has so far procured 1.94 lakh tonnes across 1,111 mandis. Arrival is expected to pick up by the end of the week as full-scale harvesting begins. The state government will also own the value cut imposed on damaged wheat crops due to the weather, announced Bhagwant Mann, Punjab's chief minister, via Twitter. The value cut will cost an estimated INR60 crore ($8m) for the 100-120 lakh tonnes of crop expected to reach the mandis.

The government’s annual wheat purchases for 2022-23 dipped to a 15-year low this year to 18.79 million tonnes, compared to 44 million tonnes purchased in the previous year, due to lower output.

The government’s wheat stock as on January 1, 2023, which is less than two weeks away, is estimated to be 15.9 million tonnes, higher than the buffer norm of 13.8 million tonnes applicable on that date, the official said. (PTI)
