Balancing accountability and support can be tricky, but it’s key to your clients’ growth.
Start by setting clear expectations together, ensuring they understand the goals and their role.
Provide consistent feedback and gently hold them accountable, while also offering encouragement and understanding.
Celebrate their progress and be there to help them through challenges. I always feel, “True growth happens when support and accountability walk hand in hand.”
Embrace this balance to guide your clients towards success while nurturing their confidence.

There are 4 key things I do that I found helpful at the closing of the session.
First, ensure the client is clear about WHAT they are doing, HOW they are doing it, and by WHEN they expect to accomplish it.
Second, ask their commitment level on a scale of 1-10 (1 being the lowest level, 10 being the highest level) to their established WHAT, HOW, and WHEN.
Third, identify and discuss obstacles that might be a factor in slowing down or preventing them from keeping their commitment and one thing they will do to help them stay on track.
Fourth, I ask what specific support would they like from me to hold them accountable.
I’ve experienced this as fostering a balanced approach to support and accountability.

Being able to provide each team member with the necessary time for a coaching session that allows for mutual listening, setting clear expectations, KPIs to measure progress, and next steps in competency development is always a leadership priority.

A key precept in coaching is the idea that “I (the coach) can’t want this more than you (the mentee) do.”
Football coaches don’t play the game for their players. They help their players play the game better. It’s the same in career and life coaching. When a mentee and I put our heads together and agree on the steps that will boost their chances of success, the mentee must then take those steps if they want to see better outcomes. I can offer guidance and support and ideas to make the process go more smoothly, but success ultimately depends on the desire and work put in by the person who wants to see the change.

In my coaching, I balance accountability and support by setting clear goals and expectations with my clients, using interactive tools like Notion and Miro to keep everything organized. We have regular check-ins to track progress and adjust as needed. I listen empathetically, offering support when things get tough, and encourage them to take ownership of their journey. I stay flexible, adapting my approach based on what each client needs—sometimes giving a push, other times being more supportive. Celebrating even small wins is important to keep them motivated and confident, helping them feel both challenged and supported.
