🤔 A Venture Capital director/doctor (Namrata Rastogi, MD), a founder/doctor (Dr. Keith Tsui), a venture partner (Gemma Bloemen), and a serial entrepreneur (Janardan Prasad) walk into Google HQ to talk about AI in healthcare … What results in an incredibly balanced and insightful discussion on the current state of AI in healthcare and what the future might hold. Here were my key takeaways: 1️⃣ Data Privacy & Security: Emerging AI models can now be trained offline, reducing data leak risks. 2️⃣ The present: Lots of AI innovation is currently happening in administration, radiology, and primary care. 3️⃣ The future: As we move into the AI-enabled healthcare generation, these are some developments that were exciting to the panel: - Multimodal LLMs: Personalized health AI by integrating e-records, genetics, drug data, and more. - Preventative Health: Early risk detection by connecting data points before disease onset. - Evolving Data Privacy: Future preference for AI-only data access to minimize redundant questioning. - Explainability: AI-driven transparency in clinical decisions. 4️⃣ Challenges & Considerations: - The quality and accuracy of data input into LLMs are crucial—reducing "hallucinations" and improving output quality are key areas of focus. - Healthcare tech needs to be tailored not just for the industry but for specific local healthcare needs. “We need to talk less about AI adoption in healthcare and more about improving healthcare adoption with AI” This was my favourite quote from the 101 GenAI 'AI in healthcare' event yesterday. New models come with amazing capabilities but innovators need to understand end goals and the clinical ecosystem before they set out. Especially true with the existing challenges with tech adoption in the #NHS. Some other key takeaways: • 💫 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲. Traditional LLMs are not (yet) in a place to perform clinical workflows. We need to build specifically for healthcare. •🚀 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻, 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 *𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱! Investors know you understand the problems better than anyone. • 🔑 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆 . Healthcare professionals can’t and won’t sacrifice valuable time understanding yet another system. • 🔥“𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀” 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲. Strike the balance. • ❤️ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. Hearing from experts like Dr. Namrata Rastogi, MD (Enigma Ventures), Dr. Keith Tsui (Medwise AI) and Gemma Bloemen (Norrsken VC) provided valuable insights into this space's current challenges and opportunities. My five key takeaways: 🌉Bridging the global healthcare gap: AI can help address the supply-demand imbalance in healthcare, but it requires nuanced training and fine-tuning of models to meet specific local needs. 📈Scaling healthcare innovations: Great "AI" technologies exist, but their potential is often limited by scalability challenges. To make a real impact, these solutions must be implemented across entire healthcare systems. ⚖️Navigating data privacy and regulations: Trust in AI requires strict adherence to data privacy regulations and ensuring high-quality, secure data practices that protect patient information. 👩🏻⚕️Empowering healthcare professionals (HCPs): AI tools, such as multimodal LLMs, can reduce the burden on clinicians by streamlining tasks like report writing and enhancing diagnostic accuracy, allowing them to focus on more complex cases. 🏥 Shifting to preventive healthcare: Leveraging AI to connect data points early on can help shift the healthcare model from reactive to preventive, enabling earlier diagnosis and better management of potential health risks. As the Director of Enigma Ventures, I had the privilege of organising and speaking at the #GenAI in #Healthcare event held at Google yesterday—a sold-out success that brought together the brilliant minds of the London health tech community! 📅 The journey began in May when Janardan Prasad, CEO of 101 GenAI, proposed we host an event on the transformative potential of GenAI in Healthcare.
