Catalyzing action on water resources reform | public-private-civil society partnerships for water security
About us
Water and climate change are fundamentally linked. Recently, revised data showed that, under prevailing trends, the world will face a 56 percent shortfall between demand and supply of water by 2030 (WRI). Additionally, water knows no borders. Water issues are local, national, regional, and global and they require attention and resources at every level. The 2030 Water Resources Group (2030 WRG) is a unique public, private, civil society multi-donor trust fund managed by the World Bank. We support stakeholders in collective decision-making, and in co-designing out-of-the-box solutions that promote strong socio-economic development across all sectors connected to water. Our global partners include governments (the governments of Hungary), private companies (Ab InBev, Coca-Cola, Nestlé, Unilever and UPL), development banks (African Development Bank, IFC, Inter-American Development Bank, and World Bank), INGOs and IGPs (BRAC, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, IUCN, GGGI, GWP, UNDP, and the World Economic Forum). 2030 WRG was launched in 2008 at the World Economic Forum and has been hosted by The World Bank Group since 2012.

“We can only solve this crisis if we think in much broader terms about how we govern water... By thinking and acting multilaterally. So, we not only save countless children’s lives and improve communities’ livelihoods today, but secure a much better and safer future everywhere," highlights Co-Chair Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President of Singapore, speaking at the launch of our #EconomicsOfWater report. United Arab Emirates and The World Bank are working together to address several global challenges, and global water crisis is one of them. I will be in Dubai next week to discuss our partnership for global water security and climate adaptation. There is so much to learn from United Arab Emirates’s experiences in turning scarcity into an opportunity for innovation, digitalization, and smart water management. While in #Dubai, I will also join Annual Meetings of the World Economic Forum ‘s Global Future Council (GFC) on Future of Food and Water Security of which I am a member. It’s clear that with the water we have, we can’t continue to eat and grow food as we do now, and there is a need for fundamentally shifting agri-food systems that are more resilient to water. #Recipeforalivableplanet #NourishandFlourish Global Water Security and Sanitation Partnership 2030 Water Resources Group Iva Ilieva Hamel Safaa El-Kogali Ousmane Dione Mesky Brhane Salman Soz

I just returned from a very exciting visit to India in which I participated in the India 100 cities water supply, sanitation and solid waste management mission. As detailed in the post below by Saroj Kumar Jha, the Government of India (GoI) has requested the The World Bank bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) to assist the union government and participating state governmetns prepare a knowledge product on how to develop bankable projects to improve municipal services and the financial sustainability of these services. 2030 Water Resources Group will continue to support this ambitious program as it unfolds over the next few months to identity how to bring in greater private sector innovation and financing into municipal service delivery in India.
Just concluded a ten day mission to India with experts from Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Asian Development Bank (ADB) IFC - International Finance Corporation The World Bank MIGA #Brazil and #Portugal, to exchange knowledge and good practices in water supply, sanitation and solid waste management through banakable projects. Our mission also included visit to the States of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Tamilnadu. #100 Cities Water Supply, Sanitation, and Solid Waste Management Initiative of the Government of India is first of its kind anywhere in the world due to its scale and comprehensive approach to tackling urban water challenges, through: - improved water sector governance through smart, integrated water utilities - build water-secured and resilient cities which are the engines of growth - Priortize water losses reduction in the distribution network using performance based contracts - improved service delivery along the entire water value chain through bankable projects - make used water treatment and reuse a priority for all levels of the Government The World Bank Asian Development Bank (ADB) IFC - International Finance Corporation MIGA teams are working in a collaborative manner to develop a national program for such cities, in consultation with the Government of India, State Governments and City Governments under the leadership of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and #Department of Economic Affairs. #Water is the thread that connects climate change vulnerabilities and responses when it comes to climate #mitigation and #adaptation. 💦 Climate mitigation and adaptation measures must therefore focus on water as a priority. Countries are giving more predominance to water-related strategies in their nationally determined contributions (#NDCs) to the Paris Agreement. However, there remains considerable room for enhancing these measures, as many NDCs lack specific, quantitative targets and fail to consider the cross-sectoral impacts of water use. SIWI, through the support of #GIZ, has developed recommendations based on a review on how the inclusion of water has evolved within the NDCs. ⏩ Download the policy brief for a detailed analysis and examples from countries on how these national climate plans can be achieved in practice. 📄 https://bit.ly/3TJGcCK --- #SIWI #WaterGovernance #WaterScarcity #WaterSolutions #Freshwater #ClimateChange #CliamteMitigation #ClimateAdaptation #ParisAgreement #SDGs #SDG6 #ResilientCities #Resilience

The multi-stakeholder Platform for a Water Secure Gauteng (PWSG) was launched on June 18th. One of the deliverables is a water security dashboard to give insight into the water system and key municipal service delivery metrics. We released the first dashboard on Sept 13th. The plan is to release the larger dashboard on a monthly basis. A weekly update will now be issued with available data - on Sept 27th we released the first one with system and water consumption updates. In future we aim to add information on leaks and repair. A dedicated page has now been set up on the Dept of Water and Sanitation website with the link provided below. #watersecurity #randwater #johannesburg #ekurhuleni #tshwane #development #municipalservicedelivery #southafrica https://lnkd.in/dJdp6Sed
