In early 2023, 36 Degrees North approached us with an aspirational goal to rename and rebrand itself as it moves into its new 100,000+ sq/ft home on Cheyenne Ave. A dream project for us? Absolutely. But it’s also a little daunting creating the next iteration of a Tulsa institution that has helped so many people and ideas become reality. We started with the rename process, generating hundreds of names and paring down to a dozen or so. We had a board presentation. A board vote. Another round of exploration. Another board presentation. Almost had buy in, but something felt off. The name didn’t give us the magical feeling we wanted. So we threw out all the previous work and started from a fresh angle. Another 220 names were brainstormed. We narrowed down to 16. Then 5. And then, without hesitation, we narrowed down to 1. As in, THE one. The obvious winner we had been searching for, for well over a year: Gradient. In physics, a gradient is an increase or decrease in the magnitude of a property observed in passing from one point or moment to another. It’s a beautiful analogy on the experience of existing inside 36°N. The word also lends itself to a design universe full of color. The Gradient logo symbolizes growth and connection. The logomark, with its two concentric rings of spokes, represents individual connections within Gradient and the outward spread of knowledge, energy, and opportunity into the entrepreneurial community. Each spoke grows thicker, symbolizing entrepreneurs evolving and gaining momentum as they engage with Gradient’s resources and network. We also used 36 spokes in each of the concentric rings, and a 36° angle on the “g” letterform. A little nod to the past while stepping into the future. #tulsabranding #labordivision #36degreesn

Director of Marketing and Communications at 36°N

If you don't mind, I'm gonna talk for just a second! I started working at 36 Degrees North in 2017 and believe it or not, they let me work the front desk. As you can imagine, my mouth was always running and I seriously could not have loved that job more because it gave me about a million new friends. We had 300 members back then and I wrote down little sticky notes with ways to remember everyone's names (example: Harlan Hutson: transition glasses, likes bird watching). I'm coming up on 8 years of knowing and loving this place, and 8 years later we have 3,000+ members (sticky note trick no longer works), a gorgeous, massive, historic new location incoming, AND!! A NEW NAME!!!??? This rebranding process is probably the spookiest project I've ever been a part of. Taking an organization with so much brand equity- one that's trusted and beloved by the community- and putting it in a new outfit?! I mean seriously- I'm just a girl!!! But we've been so overwhelmed and thankful for the nice things you've said about it, and flattered by the number of bribes we received to reveal the name early. We obviously turned those down (most of them). I've had the best time working with the team at Labor Division and Devon Laney over the past year to build this brand that tells the story of where we're headed. Seriously, it was an honor. These people are really smart! So now, we introduce Gradient. Gradient is a testament to the power of diversity—how a range of ideas, talents, and perspectives can blend to drive innovation and economic growth. And growth is what we do best! Three thousand members and counting, over $1 BILLION in economic impact, and about a million little wins along the way. We're just getting started! 💚 Watch the insanely cool video here: https://lnkd.in/gRYfycuW

Connecting Tulsa to the nation through innovative partnerships

Full Circle Moment! 🟢 In January 2016, 36 Degrees North opened at the corner of Main & Cameron in Tulsa. After years of building a concept, refining a business model, construction, branding and marketing, and programming, we finally launched Tulsa’s hub for entrepreneurs! 8+ years later, after more time perfecting a concept, refining a business model, a lot of construction, refreshed branding and marketing, and innovative new programming, 36 Degrees North is evolving to become Gradient! But corner of Main & Cameron, you can’t get rid of me so easily! As 36 Degrees North moves into their new 110,000 SF mega space a few blocks away, NYU Tulsa is moving in! How lucky am I to have been a part of such amazing projects in the Arts District?! Full Circle, indeed! 🟣
