Karen Nohelty and Natalie Eloe, MS, BCBA, LBA will be presenting "Achieving Alignment: Practical Skills for Providing Values-Based Caregiver Support" in July at the annual Women In Behavior Analysis conference. Event Description This interactive workshop will teach clinicians strategies for providing collaborative and compassionate caregiver training. Attendees will learn to individualize caregiver support by first assessing caregiver values and priorities, then linking these to treatment goals. During this process, clinicians will be taught how to use open-ended questions and reflective listening to gather crucial clinical information from caregivers, including those from diverse backgrounds. While misalignment and disagreement are a common occurrence in ABA therapy, clinicians may experience this even more often when collaborating with caregivers with lived experiences and values that differ from theirs. Strategies will be shared to assess alignment with caregivers from the outset of collaboration and problem solve misalignment through a lens of cultural humility. Skills will be taught using behavioral skills training, including active practice. Takeaways include strategies to establish rapport and trust, align treatment with caregiver-identified values, and engage caregivers as partners. Clinicians will gain practical tools to provide caregiver training that is individualized, compassionate, and values-based through hands-on practice of taught skills. Materials and guides will be provided in both print and electronic formats. Attendees should bring a writing instrument or a laptop to complete guided activities. The content will be relevant for beginner and intermediate ABA practitioners seeking to enhance their caregiver training and collaboration skills.
