We’re honored to return to one of SOM’s most defining projects, the John Hancock Center (now 875 N. Michigan Avenue), where we’ve been entrusted with the redesign of its iconic 95th and 96th floors. This collaboration with Magnicity, the parent company of 360 CHICAGO, presents a unique opportunity to refresh and elevate this historic space—known to many as the former Signature Room—enhancing its role in Chicago’s architectural and cultural fabric. “The John Hancock Center is a revolutionary project—the world’s first tall mixed-use tower that forever changed how we approach urban architecture,” said SOM Partner Scott Duncan. “The experience at the top is extraordinary, with expansive views of Lake Michigan and the Magnificent Mile. It’s not just an observation point; it’s an opportunity to rethink its role as a premier destination in the city’s cultural and architectural narrative.” Learn about the undertaking of this iconic space below as the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Our annual fall luncheon, which took place yesterday at the Sheraton Grand Riverwalk, was a huge success and focused on the economic impact of tourism. The sold-out event featured a keynote address by Daniel Thomas, Deputy Director at the Illinois Office of Tourism, who shared his expertise on tourism trends and engaged the audience with innovative strategies for attracting more visitors. Daniel revealed that tourism in Illinois generated a significant $82.6 billion in economic impact in 2023, up from $78 billion the previous year. In 2023, Illinois welcomed 112.4 million tourists, a significant increase from the previous year. International visitors made up 2.2 million of this total, with Canada and Mexico being the primary source markets. Daniel also noted that tourists are spending more per trip on average. Richard Gamble, Interim President and CEO from Choose Chicago, presented tourism data for the city, and shared the organization's efforts to attract more visitors through conventions and events. He highlighted the DNC's positive impact on Chicago's perception and the city's ability to successfully host large-scale gatherings. Kimberly Bares, President and CEO of The Magnificent Mile Association, provided remarks detailing the District's successful activations and the positive shift in consumer and media sentiment. She emphasized the District's significant contribution to Chicago's economy, generating $17.6 billion in consumer spending from 2019 to 2023. A panel discussion among the three was moderated by Association Vice Chair, Nichole Benolken, and further underscored the crucial role of tourism in job growth and tax revenue. Participants agreed on the industry's substantial economic impact, with Daniel citing 278,200 state-wide tourism jobs in 2023, Rich noted a 6% increase in jobs from Chicago tourism, and Kimberly highlighted that The Mag Mile District generates 21% of all jobs in Chicago. The luncheon underscored the successful collaboration between the state, city, and district in promoting tourism and boosting the local economy. We reaffirmed our commitment to maintaining and enhancing this positive growth trend in the tourism sector. Together, the Illinois Office of Tourism, Choose Chicago, and The Mag Mile will continue to collaborate and invite visitors to experience the wonders of "The Middle of Everything."
