Relying solely on off-the-shelf content is like getting directions from someone who doesn’t live nearby. They don’t know your points of reference. You wish someone could just tell you to “turn left at the coffee place you love, go past Jim’s house, then right at the old High School.” But instead, you get something about Main Street, 500 meters, and North by North West. In L&D, context is everything. We can’t afford to deliver training that’s so generic, it’s hard to apply in any real workplace. That’s what makes peer-driven content so powerful. We need internal subject-matter expertise to make our content effective. As Sam Allen, Head of Global Learning and Development at Ideagen said: It’s the difference between knowing how to drive, and knowing where you’re going. Want to get your SMEs involved? Here are 3 quick tips shared by our panelists Sam, Preeti Goel, Senior Learning and Development Partner at HelloFresh, and Steve Rush, Global Head of Learning and Skills at MSCI, at a recent webinar: 1️⃣ Make it easy: Provide simple templates and tools to help SMEs create content without feeling overwhelmed—including AI-powered authoring to jumpstart the process. 2️⃣ Collaborate closely: Work with managers to identify the right experts and keep them accountable through clear expectations. 3️⃣ Recognize their impact: Show how SME-driven content makes a real difference, like reducing onboarding time or boosting productivity—giving SMEs ownership in company success. Catch the full webinar replay (link in comments) if you, too, need better directions to get where you need to go. #LearningAndDevelopment #InternalExperts #SMEs

But the single most important thing we should care about is what people need to do differently. And this mindset can really shift perspectives.
