While the vessel’s return to port may seem routine, it underscores a broader commitment from the Philippines to maintain a persistent presence in these contested waters—a strategy that involves rotating new ships into the region to assert their territorial claims. The situation is becoming increasingly precarious. Repeated confrontations, intentional ramming incidents, and aggressive maneuvers from the Chinese Coast Guard risk sparking an unintended conflict.
