Huge news! A2IM member Qobuz has released its per-stream royalty rate confirmed by an independent audit – a first for a streaming platform and a shining example of their commitment to transparency and fairer compensation for artists. For the fiscal year 2024, Qobuz distributed royalties corresponding to an average of $0.01873 per stream. In terms of average revenue per user (ARPU), Qobuz generated an average revenue of US$121.13 per year, where the market average is US$22.38 per year². Today, in honor of Aretha Franklin’s birthday, we ask Congress to pass the American Music Fairness Act and provide a performance royalty to artists for terrestrial radio broadcasts. In arguably the most famous example, Aretha Franklin never received royalties for her version of “Respect”, despite the millions of plays on broadcast radio. The U.S. is the only democratic country that does not mandate performance royalties for sound recordings. AM/FM radio rakes in billions in advertising dollars every year, yet do not compensate these artists fairly.
