Bringing bio-innovations from the lab to commercial relevance.
About us
At ABPDU, our passion for bio-innovation drives us. Our goal is to expedite the commercialization of advanced, next-generation biofuels and bioproducts by providing industry-scale test beds. The Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office established the ABPDU as part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in 2009. We’ve been operational since 2012, collaborating with researchers in the bio-products industry, the national labs, and academia to optimize and scale technologies to enable the commercialization of bio-based chemicals, materials, and fuels.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve just completed my second year as a professional mentor at Berkeley Lab for TechWomen, a U.S. Department of State initiative that empowers and connects the next generation of women leaders in STEM across Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East. This year, I had the privilege of mentoring two extraordinary emerging leaders (ELs): Ntokozo (Happy) Msiza - Cand.Sci.Nat from South Africa and Naima Ibrahim from Kenya. It has been an incredibly inspiring experience to guide and learn from such talented individuals, exchanging insights on leadership and personal development while gaining fresh perspectives on innovation and entrepreneurship. As a mentor, it has been deeply rewarding to witness their growth and enthusiasm as they engage with our cutting-edge research, drive technological innovation, and uphold principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accountability (IDEA), which are critical for developing impactful solutions to global challenges. A huge thank you to my co-mentors, Shreya Agarwal and Mah Kadidia Konaté, for their invaluable collaboration and insights. I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my colleagues Ning Sun, Yen Ning Chai, Ph.D. Onyinye Anajemba Okonkwo, PhD, Casey Tsai,at Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) and Joint BioEnergy Institute for their unwavering support in empowering these women leaders in STEM. #TechWomen #IDEA #LeadershipDevelopment #LBNL #ABPDU

This past summer, Waubonsee Community College professor Sheela Vemu spent ten weeks at ABPDU developing curricular modules for industrial biomanufacturing that can be incorporated into community college education. As part of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Visiting Faculty Program, Vemu received hands-on training from ABPDU staff and networked with Bay Area organizations in the biomanufacturing space. "Coming into this program, I really wanted to be in an immersive environment, and I can definitely say I achieved that by coming to ABPDU," said Vemu. "Everyone did their part to make me feel welcome and to help me out in some way . . . as a scientist, I’ve worked on many teams, but none like the one at ABPDU." This week in UC Berkeley's Seminar in Bioprocess Engineering, our students took their second field trip of the Fall 2024 semester to the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU). Just down the hill from campus in nearby Emeryville, ABPDU is a world class pilot-scale bioprocessing facility designed to support the development & scale-up of biofuels, biomaterials, and other biochemical products. As part of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, ABPDU was established by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to help ramp up the bioeconomy. To do this, the team at ABPDU works with early stage startups to successfully scale their bio-based processes & products from the laboratory to pilot-scale (and beyond!). To help grow the biomanufacturing workforce, ABPDU partners with UC Berkeley Master of Bioprocess Engineering (MBPE) program to host the capstone CHMENG 275L Advanced Bioprocess Engineering Laboratory during the Spring semester. This one-of-a-kind, pilot-scale course features hands-on training and experiments with the Sartorius Ambr250 high throughput bioreactor platform, ABEC 300L stainless steel bioreactor, Alfa Laval MBPX 404S disc stack centrifuge, Alfa Laval M20 filtration skid, and Cytiva ÄKTA Avant chromatography unit. All are common bioprocessing equipment used across the biopharmaceutical, industrial biotech, and food tech industries. A BIG THANKS (!!!) to Laura Fernandez, Asun Oka, Eric Sundstrom, Jenny Duong, James Gardner, and Deepti Tanjore as well as superstar MBPE alumni Ta-Hsuan (David) Chang and Kirch Czarina Quijano for the opportunity to spend an afternoon with both you and your bioprocess unit ops! Our aspiring bioprocess scientists and engineers look forward to spending even more time together in Spring 2025 :) GO BEARS!!! 👍🐻💙💛 #ucberkeley #biobased #biochemical #bioeconomy #biofuels #biomaterials #biomanufacturing #biotechnology #fermentation #downstreamprocessing #scaleup #techtransfer

Our collaboration with Agile BioFoundry and Industrial Microbes (iMicrobes) successfully scaled up the company's bio-based process for producing P3HP, a precursor to acrylic acid. Working with ABPDU’s Eric Sundstrom, the team performed several experiments to collect data and screen process conditions. The collaboration achieved a 300-liter scale production of P3HP. “This partnership is accelerating the validation of both the scientific and the production conditions for our solutions, opening up the door to commercial partnerships for low-carbon footprint products. At a time when bio-based products are seeing growing traction, the support from the ABF and ABPDU helped us get ahead of the curve," said Industrial Microbes CEO Noah Helman.
