What if we could grab methane before it goes into the atmosphere, and make something useful out of it? Mango Materials is doing just that — using methane-eating bacteria, they've developed a way to convert methane into biodegradable polymers that can replace carbon-intensive plastics. The company collaborated with #ABPDU to optimize their process and test out industrial-scale relevant equipment before investing in their own pilot scale systems. Bringing bio-innovations from the lab to commercial relevance.
About us
At ABPDU, our passion for bio-innovation drives us. Our goal is to expedite the commercialization of advanced, next-generation biofuels and bioproducts by providing industry-scale test beds. The Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office established the ABPDU as part of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab in 2009. We’ve been operational since 2012, collaborating with researchers in the bio-products industry, the national labs, and academia to optimize and scale technologies to enable the commercialization of bio-based chemicals, materials, and fuels.

A hands-on laboratory course at ABPDU is preparing bioprocess engineering students for careers in the bioeconomy. Part of the UC Berkeley Master of Bioprocess Engineering program, the course provides students with the rare opportunity to operate industry-relevant bioprocessing equipment and learn from experts in the field. Now heading into its fifth year, the program's impact is seen in its 45 graduates who have launched careers in biomanufacturing and the pharmaceutical and food industries. The course’s developers believe the program and the course will serve as the blueprint for future workforce development efforts that will be necessary to fuel the bioeconomy. In the world of scientific research, time is indeed a precious resource. Unfortunately, chemical engineers often face the challenge of manually measuring dozens of samples per experiment. This manual process can be time-consuming, costly, and error-prone. To address this issue, I collaborated with the chemical engineers at the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) to develop a Python image analysis program that can measure liquid volume samples within a matter of seconds. The program operates through two main stages: training and prediction, both requiring a set of images. By integrating Python image processing and machine learning techniques, we developed a solution that efficiently analyzes over a dozen samples in less than a minute. Upon completion, the program also generates an Excel file containing all sample results for easy reference and analysis. For more details about the project, please refer to the poster below or feel free to message me on here. This work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) under the Community College Internship (CCI) program. Special thanks to my mentors Dupeng Liu, Ph.D., Ramkrishna Singh, PhD, and Justin Edaugal for their invaluable guidance and support throughout this project. #MachineLearning #STEMResearch
