🌿 2nd Sustainable Sport Symposium - Highlights from Heidelberg 🌿 Prof. Astrid Schubring and PhD student Kristof Jaczina from our department recently presented at the 2nd Sustainable Sport Symposium at the Universität Heidelberg (Sept 29 - Oct 1, 2024). They presented their current research with the STEPS-project group on social sustainability in elite youth sport research. The symposium focused on "Education for Sustainable Development in Sport", with experts from academia, organizations, and industry discussing key topics such as: - Sustainability in outdoor sports - Environmental challenges in physical activity - The role of sport in promoting sustainable development 🌍 Dr. Karen Petry and Katharina Morlang delivered a keynote on the Institutionalisation processes of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in German sport. In addition to the presentations and discussions, social events, like the visit to Klima Arena Sinsheim, provided great networking opportunities. 🎉 We are starting a new project 🚀 Women in sports coaching. Investigating qualification and professional pathways in German elite sport 🚀 , which we have been awarded! Just in time for the hashtag #GlobalCoachesDay – which is TODAY! The project is funded by the Bundesinstitut für Sportwissenschaft (Federal Institute for Sport Science, BISp) and part of a strategic effort to advance knowledge on women and girls in sport: https://lnkd.in/ecbb5-mp Together with a great team including Karen Petry Natalie Barker-Ruchti Ansgar Thiel and Lisa Kalina we aim to both 🔎 map the current situation of women in coach education and the coaching pathway in Germany, and to ➡ develop strategies for sport organisations to create inclusive and sustainable work conditions for women coaches. This effort will only be possible in partnership 🤝 and I am excited we have the Trainerakademie Köln des DOSB e. V. (Coach Academy Cologne), Berufsverband der Trainer/innen im Deutschen Sport e.V. This week, our Department of Sociology of Sport was honored to welcome GSU’s chancellor Marion Steffen, and new President, Prof. Dr. Ansgar Thiel! It was a pleasure to share with them the exciting ongoing activities in teaching, research, and our third mission. Together, we discussed opportunities for collaboration, internationalization, and the future development of our department. For us young PhDs, it was especially inspiring to meet the people behind the faces we’ve seen in pictures. 📈 Work in progress and an eye-opening qualitative study:
The UEFA Euro is over, and the next big event is already around the corner: the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Paris!🏅 As we gear up for this exciting time, I want to share some insights I gained from working towards my PhD project, which focuses on the development of youth athletes in parasport. It was just one of my last reads that I really felt like was worth sharing. The findings of Janine Coates and P. David Howe reflect the challenges athletes with disabilities face in finding their way into parasports. This recent study provides a deep dive into the roles parents play and the hurdles they overcome to support their children. The provided quotes from parents really give an insight into their experiences. Some key findings were: 💪 Parents in parasport often juggle multiple roles - supporters, administrators, coaches, and caregivers - all while facing a lack of local resources and funding. 🏫 Children and adolescents with disability frequently encounter social exclusion and inadequate PE opportunities in mainstream schools. This forces parents to look for community sports clubs and disability-specific organizations. 🌟 Despite these challenges, participation in sports greatly enhances self-confidence, social skills, independence, and a sense of belonging for young athletes with disabilities. 🤝 Parents benefit immensely from connecting with other parents who understand their unique challenges, providing much-needed emotional and practical support. What this means for our field: 🏟️ It's important to develop more local sports opportunities and improve the training of coaches to work effectively with disabled athletes. 🔄 Schools and community clubs should prioritize inclusivity, ensuring youth with disabilities have equal access to sports, but at the same time, provide the responsible persons with opportunities to educate themselves on the topic and the necessary resources to support these efforts. 📢 It is vital to increase awareness among educators and the community about the existing opportunities for children and adolescents with disabilities and how to support them to get into parasport. Making these opportunities visible and accessible to parents is essential for fostering inclusion, participation and ultimately talent development. This study is an amazing read for understanding the complexity of youth parasport and the essential role of parental support. Have you ever heard of FIKA? The concept of fika, a cherished Swedish tradition, was introduced to us by our Swedish colleague Kristof and Astrid Schubring, who spent the past several years at the University of Gothenburg. Fika is more than just a coffee break; it's a time to relax, connect, and enjoy each other's company over coffee and delicious pastries. Yesterday, we embraced this wonderful tradition. We gathered together, shared favorite kids books, found out that Michel aus Lönneberga is actually called Emil, and had some delicious cinnamon rolls baked by Stefanie Haberstock. ☕ 🍪 Thanks everybody for this slightly different coffee break at work! 🌟 #Fika #ResearchGroup #CoffeeBreak

🌍🏅 International Exchange Through Sport! We were honored to welcome Maree Todd, the Minister for Social Care, Mental Wellbeing, and Sport of Scotland, and her team to our Institute yesterday. The Minister was in Cologne for the football game between Scotland and Switzerland and took the opportunity to visit our university, while the Tartan Army took over our city of Cologne. ⚽ The meeting was a fantastic platform for an exchange of ideas between Minister Todd, her colleagues, and our department as well as the international office of the Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln. Astrid Schubring and Gitta Axmann presented an introduction into current research topics of our institute, nudging discussions on the intersection of sports, social sciences and politics. Specifically, we talked about how not only big events like the #EURO2024 but local sports organizations can foster social cohesion and inclusion. We highlighted the importance of sports for health, prevention, and the development of children, especially those with disabilities or special requirements. We discussed the challenges sports face, like ensuring teachers and coaches are well-prepared to meet these requirements of children and adolescents: What needs to be done to sustainably make sports a safe space for social, physical, and psychological development? A big thank you to Maree Todd and her team for the inspiring conversation and valuable exchange. We realized that our countries face similar challenges and that more interaction between politics and research, as well as more focus on social sciences, is needed to tackle these issues and promote wellbeing in society. We believe that such interactions are vital and would be highly beneficial if replicated with our own ministries.
