💡 Reflections on Decolonising Sport for Development Research: A Presentation by Matthew Holmes 💡 Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Matthew Holmes from the University of York, who delivered a thought-provoking presentation titled, "Participatory research, creative methods, and decolonising SfD research: a methodological reflection on empirical research conducted remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic". Staff from the Institute for Sociology and Gender Studies attended in person, while some colleagues joined online, including from the Institute of European Sport Development and Leisure Studies. Dr. Holmes' insightful talk focused on the use of ✨ creative methods, such as participant-led writing, photography, and oral testimony to research program delivery of Sport for Development (SfD) organizations in Zambia. The discussion explored the challenges of decolonisation in the field of SfD, potential institutional changes, and future directions for SfD work. It was a valuable reflection on how creative methods can contribute to including knowledge and insights from local communities, even when doing research remotely. Das vom Bundesinstitut für Sportwissenschaft geförderte Projekt befasst sich mit der Förderung von Trainerinnen in Deutschland. Gemeinsam mit unseren Partnerorganisationen arbeiten wir in den kommenden 18 Monaten daran, praxisnahe Lösungen zur Förderung von Trainerinnen im Leistungssport zu entwickeln. 🌿 2nd Sustainable Sport Symposium - Highlights from Heidelberg 🌿 Prof. Astrid Schubring and PhD student Kristof Jaczina from our department recently presented at the 2nd Sustainable Sport Symposium at the Universität Heidelberg (Sept 29 - Oct 1, 2024). They presented their current research with the STEPS-project group on social sustainability in elite youth sport research. The symposium focused on "Education for Sustainable Development in Sport", with experts from academia, organizations, and industry discussing key topics such as: - Sustainability in outdoor sports - Environmental challenges in physical activity - The role of sport in promoting sustainable development 🌍 Dr. Karen Petry and Katharina Morlang delivered a keynote on the Institutionalisation processes of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in German sport. In addition to the presentations and discussions, social events, like the visit to Klima Arena Sinsheim, provided great networking opportunities. 📈 Work in progress and an eye-opening qualitative study:
The UEFA Euro is over, and the next big event is already around the corner: the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in Paris!🏅 As we gear up for this exciting time, I want to share some insights I gained from working towards my PhD project, which focuses on the development of youth athletes in parasport. It was just one of my last reads that I really felt like was worth sharing. The findings of Janine Coates and P. David Howe reflect the challenges athletes with disabilities face in finding their way into parasports. This recent study provides a deep dive into the roles parents play and the hurdles they overcome to support their children. The provided quotes from parents really give an insight into their experiences. Some key findings were: 💪 Parents in parasport often juggle multiple roles - supporters, administrators, coaches, and caregivers - all while facing a lack of local resources and funding. 🏫 Children and adolescents with disability frequently encounter social exclusion and inadequate PE opportunities in mainstream schools. This forces parents to look for community sports clubs and disability-specific organizations. 🌟 Despite these challenges, participation in sports greatly enhances self-confidence, social skills, independence, and a sense of belonging for young athletes with disabilities. 🤝 Parents benefit immensely from connecting with other parents who understand their unique challenges, providing much-needed emotional and practical support. What this means for our field: 🏟️ It's important to develop more local sports opportunities and improve the training of coaches to work effectively with disabled athletes. 🔄 Schools and community clubs should prioritize inclusivity, ensuring youth with disabilities have equal access to sports, but at the same time, provide the responsible persons with opportunities to educate themselves on the topic and the necessary resources to support these efforts. 📢 It is vital to increase awareness among educators and the community about the existing opportunities for children and adolescents with disabilities and how to support them to get into parasport. Making these opportunities visible and accessible to parents is essential for fostering inclusion, participation and ultimately talent development. This study is an amazing read for understanding the complexity of youth parasport and the essential role of parental support. Have you ever heard of FIKA? The concept of fika, a cherished Swedish tradition, was introduced to us by our Swedish colleague Kristof and Astrid Schubring, who spent the past several years at the University of Gothenburg. Fika is more than just a coffee break; it's a time to relax, connect, and enjoy each other's company over coffee and delicious pastries. Yesterday, we embraced this wonderful tradition.
