Academic Consortium member The George Washington University recently published a study that found several cocoa products contaminated by heavy metals, including higher concentrations in organic products. In partnership with ConsumerLabresearchers from GW analyzed 72 different consumer cocoa products every other year over an eight year period, specifically for contamination with lead, cadmium, and arsenic. Key findings included 43% of products exceeding maximum allowable dose levels for lead, with 35% of products exceeding the maximum allowable dose level for cadmium. The study was led by Leigh A. At the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine & Health, we believe that students and trainees are the future of whole health care—and our Leadership and Education Program for Students in Integrative Medicine (LEAPS) is just one way in which we champion whole health education for future integrative medicine leaders. The LEAPS program evolved from the former AMSA Foundation and NIH grant-sponsored Educational Development in Complementary and Alternative Medicine Leadership Training Program, founded in 2003. In 2010, the Academic Consortium worked in collaboration with AMSA, Kripalu, and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine to re-imagine the program as LEAPS. Each year, LEAPS participants gather in Oceanside, California, for a weeklong retreat designed to enhance their leadership skills and knowledge base, and to empower students to partake in integrative health education at their home institutions. To date, more than 200 students have enriched their education and careers by participating in the LEAPS program. What began in 1999 as eight member institutions based in the United States has expanded to include over 86 current member institutions around the world. The first institution outside of the United States to join the Academic Consortium—and the first Canadian institution to join our community—was the University of Calgary in 2003. Mexico was the next country to join the Academic Consortium community, and our member Tecnológico de Monterrey celebrates 10 years of Consortium membership this year. In 2020, we were joined by our first institution from Australia, Western Sydney University, shortly followed by our first member from Brazil, Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in 2021.
