ACADEMY SITREP – UKRAINE CONTINUES ITS CROSS-BORDER ASSAULT INTO RUSSIA August 12, 2024 | https://lnkd.in/eW4RUF7q What has Happened: -Last week, Ukraine launched a major ground assault with troops, tanks, and Stryker armored fighting vehicles into Russia, in what is the largest incursion into the country since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. -Military analysts said the attack could be an attempt to divert Russian units from the front lines, thereby relieving some pressure on Ukrainian troops struggling to contain advancing Russian forces. -President Putin has met with his country’s security services to coordinate a military response to the attacks and called the Ukrainian incursion a “large-scale provocation.” -Ukrainian forces have captured over 300 square miles of Russian territory and taken dozens of Russian prisoners, while Russian authorities have evacuated more than 100,000 people from villages and towns in Kursk. -Zelensky finally acknowledged the attack on Saturday arguing that Russia had launched 2,000 attacks from Kursk this summer and it deserved a response. -News of a successful attack might help boost the morale of the Ukrainian people and its armed forces. -It was also reported that the Ukrainian military had established control over a gas transit station near the border, though any impact there could be minimal (both parties agreed to keep gas flowing) and gas exports from Russia into Europe fell from 45% in 2021, to 15% of all gas imports in 2023. ACADEMY SITREP – IRANIAN ATTACK ON ISRAEL IMMINENT August 5, 2024 | https://lnkd.in/ex6HPXVd What has Happened: -Today, President Biden will convene his national security team in the situation room as the U.S. believes that an Iranian attack on Israel is imminent, possibly in the next 24-48 hours. -The expectation is high for a retaliatory attack on Israel following last week’s back-to-back assassinations of Hezbollah military chief Fuad Shukr in Beirut by an Israeli airstrike and the killing of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. -Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered more destroyers and other military forces to the region, including F-22s and the USS Abraham Lincoln, to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt which was on a short-term deployment to the Middle East. -These additional forces are designed to act as a deterrent to prevent a larger conflict and are also intended to assist Israel should Iran repeat some form of its attack in April that included hundreds of drones and ballistic missiles fired at Israel. -Israel has said that it would consider launching a preemptive strike to deter Iran if it uncovered “airtight evidence” that Tehran was preparing to mount an attack. -Israel and its allies are unsure of exactly what to expect from an Iranian retaliation, and are preparing for a potentially more complex and larger assault that could include strikes from Iran directly, proxy forces in Lebanon (Hezbollah), Yemen (Houthis), as well as Hamas/Islamic Jihad and other militia forces in Iraq and Syria. ACADEMY SITREP – HAMAS POLITICAL LEADER ISMAIL HANIYEH KILLED IN TEHRAN July 31, 2024 | https://lnkd.in/ggUFb7iP What has Happened: -Earlier this morning, the head of Hamas' political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, and his Iranian bodyguard were killed in an Israeli strike on his house in Tehran. -Haniyeh, who was based in Qatar, had been visiting Iran for the inauguration of the new Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian that was held yesterday. -Iran's supreme leader Khamenei has vowed revenge against Israel over the killing, as did the IRGC in a statement released today. -This operation (which is not the first time Israel has targeted its enemies in Iran) came on the heels of the IDF airstrike yesterday in Beirut that killed Hezbollah's top military commander, Fuad Shukr, in retaliation for the rocket attack that killed 12 children and teenagers in the Golan Heights last Saturday. -Of note, Shukr was also wanted by the FBI for his involvement in the bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps barracks in Beirut in 1983, which killed 241 U.S. service members. -These two targeted killings against Hezbollah and Hamas significantly escalate tensions in the region to levels that were last seen in April, when Israel and Iran exchanged strikes. -Secretary Blinken, in addition to saying that the U.S had no knowledge of the attack, made a point of highlighting that the U.S. is still intent on achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, but the status of those discussions is unclear following the killing of Haniyeh as he was highly involved as a negotiator for Hamas. ACADEMY SITREP – PROTESTS IN VENEZUELA AFTER MADURO CLAIMS VICTORY July 30, 2024 | https://lnkd.in/gSjS7inJ What has Happened: -On Sunday July 28th, Venezuela held their widely anticipated presidential election. -Yesterday, the National Electoral Council, loyal to Maduro’s ruling party, declared that Maduro was the winner with 51% of the votes. -However, opposition candidate González and opposition leader Marina Corina Machado, who was barred from running in the election, told supporters that they had received more than 70% of the vote in the election. -Now, leaders on both sides are calling on their followers to take to the streets in Venezuela, in a sign that the situation (which started with this weekend’s disputed election) is getting worse. -The Biden administration said that “electoral manipulation” had eliminated any credibility to the claim of victory by President Maduro and it left the door open regarding fresh sanctions. -Latin American countries including Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Uruguay refused to recognize the results of the election.
