  • 👋🏿👋🏾👋🏽 Hey! Did you know August is Black Business Month? We voted for our elected officials earlier this month, and now it’s time to vote with our dollars and support Black-owned businesses. Supporting Black-owned businesses is essential to the development of our diverse communities. We are excited that more Black entrepreneurs are opening small businesses nationwide – according to the most recent census, Black businesses support 3.6 MILLION jobs and create hundreds of BILLIONS in annual revenue. Despite this, only 1% of Black business owners obtain a business loan in their first year, forcing folks to rely on cash and support from family and friends. #themoreyouknow 🌈😎 ✅ Looking for an easy way to support? Join us at the Delridge and SeaTac Farmers Markets! *Delridge is open every Saturday, from 10am – 2pm, and *SeaTac’s next pop-up is Wednesday, September 4th, from 3pm – 7pm. ✅ Interested in even more Black-owned businesses? Visit Seattle Good Business Network’s directory of Black-Owned Businesses at seattlegood.org. ✅ Are you a member of the African Diaspora community and want to start a small business? • ACHD's SeaTac Farmers Market opening day was featured in The Seattle Times! We're so grateful for the overwhelming support of our farmers market expansion. 💙 Why is it important that we have a holistic community farmers market in SeaTac? "Officials with African Community Housing & Development, which is based in SeaTac, said the market serves not only one of the region’s most diverse communities, but also an area with intense need. In the census tract where the market is located, nearly a quarter of people live in poverty, according to U.S. Census Bureau data. At least a third of the population lives more than a mile away from the nearest large grocery store or supermarket. Many visitors are East African, Southeast Asian or Latino residents who have few healthy, affordable food choices nearby, officials said." https://lnkd.in/gQaxpKbE

  • 🌶 This Wednesday, we celebrated the inaugural opening day of ACHD's SeaTac Farmers Market! ACHD is so grateful to our community, staff, and friends at Matt Griffin YMCA and the City of SeaTac for all the support and spirit it took to put on such a beautiful event. Expanding our holistic community market model into SeaTac allows us to continue our work expanding access to locally sourced and healthy foods while fostering a spirit of abundance in the community. We encourage everyone to join us for the rest of the farmers market season, the first Wednesday of the month in SeaTac (through Nov.) and every Saturday (through Oct.) in Delridge. To keep up to date with market happenings and see which vendors will be joining us each day, follow @delridgefarmersmarket on Instagram and Facebook! -- About the ACHD's SeaTac Farmers Market: The inaugural season will operate monthly from 3pm to 7pm (July 3, Aug. 7, Sept. 4, Oct. 2, & Nov. 6) at the Matt Griffin YMCA. Building on the immense success of the Delridge Farmers Market, the SeaTac Farmers Market fosters a vibrant space that supports BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) business owners and ensures access to healthy, fresh food for the SeaTac community. The market features a diverse line-up of vendors offering locally sourced produce, flowers, prepared food from global chefs, artisanal goods, and more. ACHD is committed to addressing food insecurity and promoting health equity. Our market model provides free produce bags, will accept SNAP/EBT, and doubles the purchasing power of SNAP users with SNAP Market Match. Additionally, every child attending the market receives a $5 Kid Bucks voucher to spend on nutritious food. In alignment with our slogan, “center culture and cultivate community,” the market also provides free health and wellness resources such as diapers, personal care products, home cleaning products, and more. Reach out to info@achdo.org for more info!

  • 🥳 Last week, ACHD Vice President Bilan Aden was invited to speak at Children & Nature Network’s annual conference. Children & Nature Network supports a global movement of leaders working to turn the trend of an indoor childhood back out to the benefits of nature. This year’s conference, “Nature Everywhere,” brought together thought leaders across all sectors of influence. Bilan’s TED-style talk, “Cultivating Innovators: Outdoor Education Rooted in the African Diaspora Experience,” highlighted the many intersections that lead to a lack of representation of the Black community in outdoor recreation, the natural sciences, and outdoor education. In line with her “growth mindset” perspective, Bilan shared how ACHD’s outdoor programming tackles these problems head-on to promote a sense of belonging for the African Diaspora youth and families we serve. By combining culturally specific programming with access to holistic resources, all delivered by talented educators of color, we can cultivate a sense of safety and welcome families into nature. Bilan closed her talk by encouraging the educators in the room to bring this model of program to their communities and listen to the wisdom in storytelling to find nuggets of insight that inform culturally specific curricula. She shared the story of bringing her own daughter into nature; how incredible it was to see her develop a sense of safety and understanding of nature. ❤️ Here's an excerpt from her talk: “We wanted to determine why we weren’t seeing diversity in outdoor spaces. Black families reported being unsure of what to do outside and feeling uneasy in local parks. They shared that the outdoors evoke traumatic imagery – of being hunted as slaves or of being stuck in a refugee camp. Whether these images come from their own life experience or generations of storytelling, they are valid and real. The concept of spending time in nature is a distant luxury that doesn’t feel valuable when we look at the many realities that Black families face. The metaphorical walls are too high. The overwhelming sentiment? Outdoor spaces are ‘not for us’… One year ago, I brought my daughter, Simone, on one of ACHD’s family camping trips. Her bright toddler eyes scanned the landscape, seemingly awed by the greatness of just our small campground. I saw excitement and curiosity in her, not fear. I saw the older kids playing with her, unconsciously teaching her what they learned themselves. I saw parents and older siblings relaxed, breathing in fresh air and exhaling the heaviness of obligation – even if only for a moment. In these moments, nature and community are the instructors. In these moments, as my daughter so eloquently put it in her first-ever sentence: ‘I see tree.’”🌲
