About us

Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) is a disaggregated data collection, analysis, and crisis mapping project. ACLED collects information on the dates, actors, locations, fatalities, and types of all reported political violence and protest events around the world. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore, and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open for free use by the public. ACLED is a registered non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status in the United States. ACLED receives financial support from the Complex Risk Analytics Fund (CRAF’d), the European Commission, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Tableau Foundation. ACLED was created by Clionadh Raleigh, a Professor of Political Violence and Geography at the University of Sussex, in 2005 as a component of her PhD work. Since 2014, ACLED has operated as a non-profit, non-governmental organization incorporated in Wisconsin. In 2022, ACLED expanded coverage to the entire world, collecting data in real time and publishing weekly updates.

Cabo Ligado Update: 30 September - 13 October 2024 Islamic State #Mozambique (ISM) militants and security forces engaged in limited violence across Cabo Delgado in early October. However, around 100 people believed to have been held in insurgent camps in the Catupa forest surrendered in Macomia town on 11 October. Most were women and children, but some insurgent fighters were also reported to have surrendered. Meanwhile, a local source reported that on 29 September insurgents looted food from the village of Miangalewa in Muidumbe district, near the Messalo. The deputy president’s impeachment triggers unrest in #Kenya Kenya faced considerable unrest in September and October, driven in part by the impeachment process against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The impeachment, following tensions sparked by President William Ruto’s response to the Gen Z protests, alleges corruption, undermining of the National Intelligence Service, and tribalism. From 14 September to 11 October 2024, ACLED records 107 political violence events and 71 reported fatalities in Kenya, with most events taking place in Makueni. Further, Kenya continues to face the long-standing issues of violence in schools, persistent student demonstrations, and a rise in al-Shabaab attacks targeting civilians and security forces. The expanding reach of gang activity in #Haiti Gang activity in Haiti, historically concentrated in the Ouest region, has expanded as political instability persists. #ACLED data shows that by 2024, gang violence impacted nearly 100 neighborhoods in the Port-au-Prince arrondissement, a 20% increase compared to the previous six months. The consolidation of the Viv Ansanm alliance has allowed gangs to focus on criminal activities and confront security forces, extending their operations across a broader range of areas. Gangs have also shifted their focus to key strategic locations, including the city center, surrounding neighborhoods, and major road axes, where gangs have notably challenged the state and targeted public and security buildings. February's attacks further fueled gang activity in the Pétion-Ville and Tabarre communes, testing the capacity of security forces to respond.
