For our October Volunteer Spotlight, we’re thrilled to highlight Haley Erickson, Ambassador Constituent Lead with ACS CAN Minnesota! Haley also is a member of the Young Leaders Caucus, one of our six volunteer affinity groups. She is a passionate volunteer that dedicates her time to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Haley is a breast cancer survivor and recently shared her story at our #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth event that focused on the importance of equitable access to breast cancer screenings. We advocate for evidence-based public policies to reduce the cancer burden for everyone.
About us
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) advocates for evidence-based public policies to reduce the cancer burden for everyone. We engage our volunteers across the country to make their voices heard by policymakers at every level of government. We believe everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer. Since 2001, as the American Cancer Society’s nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, ACS CAN has successfully advocated for billions of dollars in cancer research funding, expanded access to quality affordable health care, and advanced proven tobacco control measures. We stand with our volunteers—people whose lives have been impacted by cancer—rallying to demand change. Together, we’re working to make cancer a top priority for public officials and candidates at the federal, state, and local levels. By engaging advocates across the country to make their voices heard, ACS CAN influences legislative and regulatory solutions that will end cancer as we know it, for everyone. More than 38,000 advocates have already signed a petition urging Congress to increase cancer research funding in this year’s spending bill. Research is one of the best ways to get us closer to ending cancer as we know it, for everyone. We're getting ready to deliver these petitions to decision-makers shortly after Election Day. But first, we need to get more people to sign the petition to have the greatest impact. Will you help us reach 45,000 signatures by signing the petition right now? Thank you for making your voice heard and spreading the word!

#HispanicHeritageMonth is an opportunity to highlight the ACSí Se Puede Hispanic/Latino Advocacy Alliance, one of ACS CAN’s six volunteer affinity groups! This incredible group of volunteers is consistently working to reduce cancer disparities in their communities. As part of their efforts, the affinity group continuously advocates for more materials and resources to be created in Spanish to support inclusion. Many members have also helped us reach a wider audience by completing media interviews in Spanish. And this #CancerLobbyDay, some affinity group members even held their lawmaker meetings in Spanish! Last year, ACSí Se Puede hosted an important webinar that highlighted the importance of cancer research and clinical trials in Hispanic/Latino communities. This year, they are collaborating with the other five affinity groups to host an event for #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth on the various disparities that exist in each of their respective communities. We’re so proud of the amazing work this affinity group is doing to help end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Learn more about the group: https://lnkd.in/e9BmpZUF

For our September Volunteer Spotlight, we are thrilled to highlight Eugenia (Gina) Posada from ACS CAN Texas ! Gina serves as Ambassador Constituent Team (ACT) Lead for district 16 and has been a longtime volunteer. Gina is also a founding member of the ACSí Se Puede Hispanic/Latino Advocacy Alliance, one of our six volunteer affinity groups. Gina lost her father to stomach cancer when she was seven years old, and since has lost other family members to cancer. “I used to attend a cancer support group in El Paso where my friend introduced me to ACS CAN. I used to translate the information and presentations at the cancer group for people who did not speak English. There were no interpretation services at the meetings. She suggested since I like to advocate for people, the ACS CAN experience would be a great match for me.” Gina has been integral in encouraging more Hispanic/Latino volunteers to get involved with ACS CAN. “Recruiting is a challenge; some people shy away from speaking to legislators. I tell people that legislators work for us, we elect them, so we need to bring topics that matter to us [to their attention] and make change happen. We must open the dialogue and have those much-needed conversations.” Gina was one of this year’s recipients of the ACT Lead of the Year Award. There were many reasons she was nominated, including co-leading a breakout session on building partnerships during the Affinity Group Roundtable, serving as a panelist in the first-ever Spanish language volunteer training for ACS CAN in 2023, and presenting during her Texas summer volunteer training on the importance of diversifying volunteer representation. Gina is a shining example of what it means to be an ACS CAN advocate. Please join us in thanking her for everything she does for the fight against cancer! #CancerAdvocacy #CancerStories #HealthEquity #HispaniceHeritageMonth #LatinoHeritageMonth #MesDeLaHerenciaHispana

Last week at #CancerLobbyDay, ACS CAN volunteers attended breakout sessions where they learned various skills to support them in their advocacy work. At the Value of Video session, volunteers learned how effective video is for storytelling, especially on social media. They practiced creating short social videos to highlight their cancer stories and address lawmakers about our Lobby Day asks, including the importance of increasing funding for cancer research. Check out some of their excellent examples! 🌟
