We advocate for evidence-based public policies to reduce the cancer burden for everyone.
About us
The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) advocates for evidence-based public policies to reduce the cancer burden for everyone. We engage our volunteers across the country to make their voices heard by policymakers at every level of government. We believe everyone should have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer. Since 2001, as the American Cancer Society’s nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, ACS CAN has successfully advocated for billions of dollars in cancer research funding, expanded access to quality affordable health care, and advanced proven tobacco control measures. We stand with our volunteers—people whose lives have been impacted by cancer—rallying to demand change. Together, we’re working to make cancer a top priority for public officials and candidates at the federal, state, and local levels. By engaging advocates across the country to make their voices heard, ACS CAN influences legislative and regulatory solutions that will end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Elections have the power to shape the future of health care, especially for those impacted by #cancer. The leaders we elect make decisions that directly affect cancer research funding, access to health care, the availability of lifesaving cancer screenings, and more. But it’s not just about policies—it’s about people. Patients, survivors, caregivers, and health care professionals are all directly impacted by the outcomes of elections. That's why on #NationalPatientAdvocacyDay, we're working with Vot-ER to ensure that patient voices are heard loud and clear this election season. This is more than just a partnership—it's a movement. Voting is a critical social determinant of health, as it directly influences the policies and resources that shape health care access, quality, and equity. When individuals and communities engage in the electoral process, they have the power to advocate for and support policies that address social and health disparities, ultimately leading to healthier outcomes for everyone. Together, let's make a difference. #HealthAndCivicEngagement #HealthAndVoting #PatientAdvocacy #CancerCare #CivicEngagement #CancerAdvocacy

Excited to see President Biden and the First Lady announce the next step in the #CancerMoonshot today! Up to $150 million for Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) awards will be funded to develop technologies that will allow surgeons to provide more successful tumor-removal surgeries for people facing cancer. “Cancer cases are estimated to hit an all-time high this year, and we cannot relent in driving forward public policies that will address this. Funding more researchers across the country focused on more effective and innovative treatments will bring us closer to future cancer breakthroughs and ending cancer as we know it, for everyone.” –Dr. Karen Knudsen MBA PhD, CEO of the American Cancer Society and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) “We know that a national commitment to increased cancer research funding, and passing other cancer-related policy priorities, will save lives. ACS CAN and our thousands of advocates across the country look forward to continuing our work with the administration – and elected officials at all levels of government – to ensure this commitment remains steadfast.” –Lisa A. Lacasse, president of ACS CAN Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ekQMEx5z

For over three years, Keith Hollingsworth, a Legislative Ambassador with ACS CAN Indiana, tried various types of cancer treatments to combat his stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis. This included multiple surgeries, radiation, and many rounds of chemotherapy. Despite these extreme measures, his doctors began to see the disease progress. Under their advice, Keith sought out #ClinicalTrials as a treatment option. Thankfully, Keith found a clinical trial—and even better, he’s seeing positive results for the first time in two years! Unfortunately, while Keith lives in Indiana, the trial is in California. Every two weeks, Keith travels hundreds of miles to get this lifesaving treatment. And while his insurance covers the usual treatment items like bloodwork, scans and the cost of the drugs, he’s left to pay for travel, lodging and other expenses. The Clinical Trial Modernization Act would allow trial sponsors to cover the additional costs that Keith pays out-of-pocket. If the #ClinicalTrialModernizationAct passes, Keith could save up to $2,000 a month—many cancer patients can’t afford these high costs. ACS CAN is urging Congress to pass the Clinical Trial Modernization Act so more patients like Keith have access to cutting-edge treatments, without costly barriers. Have you participated in a clinical trial or are you currently taking part in one? Share your story here: https://lnkd.in/efTe_wEN

Our stories are their stories. We're grateful to all the lawmakers who shared their cancer stories during the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means markup of the Nancy Gardner Sewell Medicare Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) Screening Coverage Act. We see the deep personal commitment to this issue and the importance for cancer patients, survivors and their families across the country. The #MCEDAct received a unanimous bipartisan vote during the markup, and to-date has over 363 House and Senate cosponsors, illustrating the immense gravity of support. We're urging Congressional leadership to take action and pass this critical legislation.

Candidates elected to the U.S. Senate in November will have a major role to play in the fight against cancer. They will vote on issues like how much funding to give to cancer research to policies impacting your health care and access to cancer screenings. Before they are even elected, we need candidates running for Senate to sign the Cancer Promise—it's a simple promise that if elected, they will support evidence-based policy solutions to help end cancer as we know it, for everyone. Send a message to the candidates running for Senate in your state today and urge them to sign the #CancerPromise:
