AdvaMed thanks Senators Amy Klobuchar and Dr. Roger Marshall for their continued efforts to expand access to breast cancer screening by introducing the bipartisan Find it Early Act. This important bill would save lives by “guaranteeing that all health insurers cover screening and diagnostic breast imaging at no out-of-pocket costs for women with dense breasts or those at higher risk of breast cancer.” Women with dense breast tissue are four to six more times likely to develop breast cancer because dense breast tissue can obscure tumors on mammograms. Tragically, many women lack insurance coverage of additional imaging and therefore delay or forgo further testing. This bill would expand women’s access to receive the scan they need with no cost to the patient. Fittingly, the bill introduction came during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Congratulations to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun on being awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of microRNA—a breakthrough in understanding how cells regulate gene expression. Their discovery has opened extraordinary opportunities for developing advanced diagnostic tools. For the IVD industry, this means the potential to detect and monitor diseases like cancer and genetic disorders at much earlier stages, enabling more precise and personalized treatments. This Nobel Prize not only celebrates individual achievement but also underscores the vital importance of continuous innovation in our field. The IVD industry is more committed than ever to translate such groundbreaking discoveries into practical diagnostic solutions that transform healthcare and improve lives globally. https://lnkd.in/eSURSx5G

One week ago, we wrapped up The MedTech Conference, and what an incredible few days we had in Toronto. Now, as we close the books on the meeting, I have been reflecting on how much progress we have made, not only with the Conference but more importantly as the medtech community. It was the largest MedTech Conference ever, with 4,350 attendees. The largest number of countries represented ever: 48. The largest number of participating companies ever: 1,926. And the most exciting gathering of medtech innovators in the world. The big turnout showed the strength of the U.S.-Canada relationship in medtech innovation. The leadership of Kevin Lobo, Chair and CEO of Stryker, as co-chair of the Conference was critical to its success, as was that of fellow co-chair James Brodie, General Manager, Canada, Johnson & Johnson MedTech. Holly Sheffield, President of CooperSurgical, led the development of an outstanding program. And we certainly couldn’t have pulled it off without the leadership of Nicole DeKort, President and CEO of Medtech Canada, and her stellar team. A special thanks goes to the amazing leaders at AdvaMed that helped execute this extraordinary event: Jennifer Brearey, Ray Briscuso, Sarah Arth, CAE, and Erin Lee, along with their incredible teams. But The MedTech Conference is about much more than attendee numbers and the AdvaMed team. It’s about people – the 4,350 people who demonstrated hands-on medtech in the exhibit halls, who joined panels, digging into the issues necessary to promote medtech innovation; and the patients, both onsite telling their stories and the millions more worldwide whose lives are made better because of medtech. In my keynote welcome address, I reflected back on the tremendous advancements in medtech over AdvaMed’s 50-year history and previewed some of the miraculous medtech innovations yet to come. I was happy to celebrate the thousands of people in the room and their counterparts worldwide who wake up every day with a passion to help patients. They make a huge difference in so many lives in the U.S., Canada, and worldwide. Their energy, intelligence, and problem-solving skills inspire all of us in #medtech to do our best work. I’m grateful for their dedication, whether on stage in Toronto or behind the scenes. Every bit of it matters to patients. We left energized and inspired to continue our work representing medtech over the next year. Thank you to the AdvaMed team for the tremendous amount of work that went into this record-breaking event. You set the bar for next year! I hope to see everyone again along with many new faces at the next MedTech Conference in San Diego, October 5-8, 2025!

From faster access to breakthrough medical technologies to improved treatment options, Medicare's new coverage policy for “breakthrough” medical technologies is a step in the right direction. However, the new policy could and should go further to help more Medicare beneficiaries in need. It is time for congressional action this fall to ensure that all Medicare beneficiaries can benefit from these innovations. The breakthrough #medtech coverage legislation, H.R. 1691, would streamline access to FDA-approved “breakthrough” medical devices, paving the way for better health outcomes for millions of seniors. AdvaMed’s Scott Whitaker writes about how the bipartisan legislation could transform patient access by removing some of the biggest barriers preventing seniors, especially from underserved communities, from accessing treatments. Toronto welcomes the MedTech Conference this week and its record-breaking 4300 attendees from 49 countries at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. This is the first time this influential meeting has been held outside the U.S. Clearly Toronto, Ontario and Canada delivered with the highest attendance ever - by a full 20 per cent over the previous high. Toronto simply works as a destination for U.S. organizations that are looking to grow internationally and MedTech is just the latest case study. Apart from the immediate impact and spending these visitors will bring, this conference is also a catalyst for investment and economic development for our life sciences sector. Just today Premier Ford and Minister Victor Fedeli announced an expanded Life Sciences Strategy and the key role of major meetings as a driver of sector development has never been more clear. Congratulations to the The MedTech Conference and AdvaMed for the record-breaking event, and to our economic development partners and champions: Shelley Carroll, ICD.D Toronto Global Stephen Lund ICD.D Toronto Region Board of Trade Invest Ontario City of Toronto Destination Toronto
