What is experiential work-based learning? You can think of it as a career test drive; the supercharged version of work-based learning. Whether learners are in internships, apprenticeships, or running a school-based enterprise, EWBL gives them the chance to do the job for an extended period of time, to get out of the passenger seat and into the driver’s seat. 🚘 Learners gain hands-on experience, develop valuable skills, and apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios with guidance from instructors and industry experts. 💡 Follow us to learn more as we get ready to launch our new resource on Experiential Work-Based Learning. Yesterday, our Executive Director spoke on behalf of Advance CTE before the DC Council in support of increased funding and access for #CTE! Thank you to everyone driving this important work forward of giving every learner access to success through Career Technical Education.
Yesterday I had the honor and privilege of testifying for the DC's Council Committee of the Whole on their new #CTE bill, which includes a new fund for CTE and related supports and experiences. A few major takeaways from my testimony: 🌟 CTE concentrators in DC in the 2022-23 school year had a four-year grad rate of 97% (and 99% and 97% for students with disabilities and students experiencing homelessness), with an 82% post-high school placement rate. Yet only 1,100 learners in DC were concentrators in that school year. 🌟 DC has made great strides in the quality of their programs of study since 2020, initially spearheaded by Richard W. Kincaid and now under the steady leadership of Clifton Martin, including expanding state-approved programs of study and the opening of the Advanced Technical Center 🌟 DC is setting ambitious, equity-related goals for improving access and persistence in its CTE programs 🌟 DC needs a dedicated investment in CTE. According to Advance CTE's State of CTE report on state CTE funding models, DC is one of only 7 states that doesn't explicitly allocate dollars to specific CTE experiences, activities, and learners. This is critical as even though federal Perkins investments have seen modest increases in recent years, when adjusted for inflation, current Perkins funding remains approximately $320 million below FY2004 levels. As a DC resident (and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) parent), it was truly a privilege to be able to speak on behalf of Advance CTE to advocate for expanded CTE in my home town. Thanks to Phil Mendelson, Robert White, Clara Haskell Botstein and others for the opportunity! #CTEWorks
