#HurricaneHelene has devastated the southeast U.S., especially western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. And there has been no shortage of news reports to cover that devastation. What garnered much less news was an unnamed tropical storm that blew through North Carolina just days before #Helene. Although it didn't get national media attention, it dumped 12-20 inches of rain over a 12-hour period across a 25-mile-wide region of southeast North Carolina. It was dubbed a "once-in-a thousand-years-storm" -- the fifth such storm that the area had seen in just the past 25 years. This is important for two reasons. First, the quick succession of the two storms underscores the fact that severe storms are becoming both more intense and more frequent. They are no longer anomalies. Secondly, by delivering rainfall ahead of Helene, the earlier storm contributed to a build-up of moisture, which may have exacerbated the damaging effects of Helene. That’s why we are thrilled to have Brad Harbaugh as our newest Account Executive for Federal Weather. You couldn’t ask for anyone with a deeper understanding of weather-related needs at the federal level. First of all, Brad is a trained #meteorologist. He received his bachelor’s degree from Penn State University and his master’s in meteorology from the Naval Postgraduate School. Secondly, Brad has a deep understanding of federal weather needs. He recently retired from the military after a 24-year career in the Air Force. During that time, he was responsible for providing strategic, operational, and tactical meteorological and oceanographic support across the Department of Defense. He was the lead U.S. meteorology representative to NATO, where he partnered with national and military meteorology directors from 29 other countries. His last assignment in the Air Force was as the Senior Meteorology & Oceanography Officer for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), where he was responsible for all space, terrestrial, and maritime weather operational forecasting. He was the lead for NGA’s Climate Security Team, working collaboratively with the other Intelligence Agencies, directly supporting the Director of National Intelligence on security issues related to climate, and informing climate policy shaped by the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board and the Secretary of Defense’s Defense Science Board. The picture here was taken in Agadez, Niger, where Brad was deployed as the commander of an air base. It was taken with a couple of base defenders before they set out on patrol. Intense Lightning Continues in eyewall of Hurricane Helene - - as of 9:07 p.m. EDT on Thurs evening, Sept 26, 2024 - - as shown by AEM Earth Networks total lightning layers in Sferic Maps. This increased lightning activity has occurred as Helene has strengthened rapidly during the past 6 hours. As of 9 p.m. EDT, Helene has sustained winds of 140 mph (Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale).
