Aecon played a significant role in the cut-up and removal of this research reactor at the Oak Ridge Research Reactor. This reactor was an isotope production and irradiation facility from 1958 and was permanently shut down in July 1987. Our team was integral to the effort to filter and drain the reactor pool water and prepare for the lower reactor vessel removal, with rigorous safety measures in place. Teams removed both 127,000 gallons of water and sediment to reach the lower portion of the reactor vessel and 157,000 contaminated bricks, and then used a 72-inch diamond wire saw to cut the final pieces that held the lower reactor vessel in place at the bottom of the reactor pool. A 20-ton overhead crane lifted that material and loaded it into a protective cask to ship it for disposal offsite. #nuclearindustry #nucleardecommissioning
