Fighting for civil rights, opportunity, and a better life for African immigrant families here in the U.S. and worldwide.
About us
African Communities Together is a membership organization of immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa and their families. ACT is dedicated to helping the African immigrant diaspora in the US to integrate socially, get ahead economically, and have a voice politically. ACT connects African immigrants to direct services, develops African immigrants as grassroots leaders, and mobilizes African immigrants through campaigns for social change. ACT launched our first chapter in New York City in fall of 2012. In 2015, we expanded our work to the Washington, DC area.

In 2018, we set an ambitious goal for ourselves: to hold our first National Convention of grassroots members. In September, that vision became a reality as 150 of our strongest member leaders from around the country came together in New York City. As we tick off the last few days before the election, we are carry ing the energy of our time together close to our hearts. Together, we will build on the progress of the past decade and chart a course for the uncertain future, driven by the voices, leadership, and dreams of African immigrants across the country.

With just a few days left until the election, African asylum seekers are feeling anxious about potential changes to immigration policies. ACT's Dr. Yves Kaduli, a member leader with our #TPS4DRC campaign, and Nils Kinuani, Federal Policy Manager, sat down with BBC to talk about growing concerns amongst African asylum seekers in the face of harsh political rhetoric and proposed immigration policies. We are extremely disappointed by this morning's Supreme Court decision to uphold the voter purge program that removed hundreds of naturalized citizens from the Virginia voter rolls, including many from our membership. We have spent months educating our community members on the importance of voting, the importance of showing up at the polls, the importance of making our voices heard. But now, a disturbing message is being sent by our highest court: that our voices are not valued and not wanted. We are living in a political climate that fans the flames of racism and xenophobia and turns a blind eye to clear attacks on voters’ fundamental rights. That won't stop us from continuing to fight to protect voters in Virginia and across the country. One week left until #ElectionDay. Have you voted early? Thank you to everyone doing the hard work of door-knocking, phone-banking, and convening their neighbors this election! A special shoutout to our #Pennsylvania team who hit the streets this weekend! #GOTV #Vote

"But a Washington Post review of state court records and interviews with election officials found no evidence that noncitizens have tried to vote during Youngkin’s term. As few as three people were prosecuted for illegal voting offenses between January 2022 and July of this year, the records showed. None of the cases involved a question of citizenship." https://lnkd.in/ek6P9zCZ

BREAKING: We are celebrating a major victory for democracy today! This morning, the court ruled in favor of plaintiffs groups in a lawsuit arguing that naturalized citizens were unlawfully and systematically removed from the voter rolls in Virginia as part of the state’s “purge program.” With less than two weeks until the election, this critical ruling restores voter registration for hundreds of naturalized citizens that were denied their fundamental right to access the ballot box, including three impacted members of African Communities Together! “This is a key victory! We are excited that the law was upheld, voting rights restored and now, all Virginians including the hundreds of registered African voters removed under Governor Youngkin’s purge program will be able to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming General Election,” says Gigi Traore, National Civic Engagement Director at African Communities Together. “Thank you Judge Giles for recognizing the direct impact Executive Order 35 has had on our nonpartisan voter engagement program. We are grateful for today's outcome and remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring civic participation is accessible to all and not a select few.” Thank you to our fellow plaintiffs the Virginia Coalition for Immigrant Rights (VACIR), the League of Women Voters of Virginia Education Fund, and the League of Women Voters of Virginia for your dedication and hard work to secure this win!
