Fighting for civil rights, opportunity, and a better life for African immigrant families here in the U.S. and worldwide.
About us
African Communities Together is a membership organization of immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa and their families. ACT is dedicated to helping the African immigrant diaspora in the US to integrate socially, get ahead economically, and have a voice politically. ACT connects African immigrants to direct services, develops African immigrants as grassroots leaders, and mobilizes African immigrants through campaigns for social change. ACT launched our first chapter in New York City in fall of 2012. In 2015, we expanded our work to the Washington, DC area.

Founded in 2013 by a first-gen Ethiopian immigrant, ACT was created to fill the “organizing gap” in African immigrant communities. Since then, we’ve connected thousands of African immigrants to vital services, built a powerful leadership base, and led successful policy campaigns. Together, we’re shaping a future where African immigrant voices are heard and empowered. ✊🌍 Have you been with ACT since the beginning? Our Pennsylvania chapter, launched in 2022, is the newest addition to ACT. In just our first year, the chapter has rapidly built a strong base, mobilizing African immigrant voters through impactful civic engagement initiatives, leading three voter engagement campaigns of door and phone canvassing across the state. Additionally, we launched a housing justice campaign with a statewide housing survey and a culturally specific 'Housing Know Your Rights' workshop series, gathering crucial insights from both renters and homeowners to inform our advocacy efforts. In addition, we responded to the needs of newly arrived migrants through partnerships with faith-based leaders and food distribution networks, providing essential food and clothing to communities in dire need. These early successes reflect our commitment to empowering Black immigrant communities across Pennsylvania. Become a member: https://lnkd.in/ekf58vuT

Launched in 2015, the Washington, D.C./Maryland/Virginia chapter of ACT has chartered a new path for ACT, combating displacement of low-income African immigrant tenants across Alexandria, VA, and fighting for airport workers to receive fair wages. As home to the nation’s capital, the DMV chapter is home to the largest community of Africans in America and first on the ground to fight for better federal immigration policies for all. As the first chapter, established in 2013, our New York chapter has laid the foundation for the future growth of ACT. Over the years, the chapter has faced some of the biggest fights of our organization’s history: Trump’s immigration raids, the COVID-19 pandemic, and so much more. Today, our New York membership has grown tremendously to include long-term New Yorkers and recent arrivals that make up this great city. Become a member: https://lnkd.in/ekf58vuT
