It's time we talk away the dark. Suicide is a topic that hides in the shadows. All too often it goes unaddressed, even when we may sense someone is struggling. It’s time we shed some light on this leading cause of death. In our brand new national public service announcement, we highlight some of the common warning signs for suicide and encourage you to start an open and honest conversation with someone you care about, and connect those at risk to help. Audacy, Inc. announced the 2024 lineup for We Can Survive, the annual event supporting the company’s mental health initiative, I’m Listening. A portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's life-saving work of delivering education, loss support, advocacy efforts and community-based programs, including our ongoing public service campaign, “Talk Away the Dark,” which raises awareness of how to spot the warning signs for suicide and having real conversations that connect people to help. "Sharing my story at the Out of the Darkness Walk was the first step towards accepting and embracing all parts of me. Quite simply, taking that first step in being vulnerable and sharing my experience changed, and quite possibly saved, my life. I have learned that I can provide a voice to those who have no voice of their own. Promoting mental health education, advocating for smarter public policy, having real conversations and speaking openly about mental health – knowing that I’m doing everything within my power – is what gets me out of bed each and every morning." “After a few years spent processing my attempt, working in therapy to heal my psyche, I began my search for a venue in which I could share my experience in a way that would benefit our community and further strengthen my own well-being. I longed for others who would understand, without judgment, and who also wanted to make a difference. My search led me to my local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.” Continue reading Melanie Figaro’s story:

"In 2005, at the age of 33, my daughter Jennifer Ann took her own life. This shining star graduated with honors, achieved accolades as an accomplished musician, and was also an avid environmentalist, a loving and attentive daughter and sister, and an advocate for the poor and disadvantaged – yet she struggled with depression and anxiety for over a decade. After her death, I relived her last days over and over again, blaming myself, and asking a thousand questions that all began the same way: 'Why?' I kept asking myself why I hadn’t driven down to be with her after she called me just two days before she died. I struggled to try to make sense of what happened, trying to put the pieces together again and again, recreating her last days or weeks. Grief stinks, it really does!" “We all need to care about suicide prevention and mental health. When we do, everything changes. The stigma is silenced. The judgment is avoided. The way things look becomes irrelevant. The fear becomes hope.” Continue reading Alyssa Relyea's story:
