Published in Nature Magazine, the article “Implausibility of radical life extension in humans in the twenty-first century” argues that to extend human life expectancy, we need to focus on preventing diseases by slowing the aging process rather than just treating illnesses after they appear. This shift could be achieved through lifestyle changes, environmental factors, and advancements in Gerotherapeutics. Over the last century, life expectancy increased by about 30 years in high-income countries thanks to public health and medical advances. However, since the 1990s, this progress has slowed. The study found that reaching 100 years of age remains rare, suggesting that unless we significantly slow down biological aging, radical life extension is unlikely to happen this century. https://lnkd.in/gjkDWkS4 #PreventativeMedicine #AgingBiology #HealthyAging #FutureOfAging #RadicalLifeExtension #Gerotherapeutics #PublicHealth #AgingResearch #BiologicalAging

Congratulations to geroscientist Gary Ruvkun on being a co-recipient of the '2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine' for his groundbreaking discovery of microRNA and its role in gene regulation! Gary, alongside Victor Ambros, unveiled the revolutionary concept of microRNAs, small non-coding RNAs that control gene expression after transcription. Their work, which started with research on C. elegans in 1993, has reshaped our understanding of gene regulation and its importance in animal development and human health. The discovery of microRNA has opened a new dimension of gene regulation and is now recognized as a crucial mechanism for complex multicellular life. This is a monumental achievement in the field of geroscience, and we celebrate Gary Ruvkun's incredible contributions to science and medicine. https://lnkd.in/dh7N-6zj #NobelPrize #Geroscience #GeneRegulation #microRNA #ScientificBreakthrough #Biology #Cellevolution #PostTranscription

AHLR President Nir Barzilai and member Andrea B. Maier had the honor of speaking at the fifth edition of the Longevity Investors Conference. This exclusive 2.5-day event is recognized as the world’s most private investor conference in the longevity field. It brings together top key opinion leaders, institutional and private investors, family offices, and funds to explore the latest trends and opportunities in longevity and rejuvenation. By fostering meaningful conversations, the conference offers invaluable insights into the future of healthy aging and breakthrough innovations.
Pioneering optimizing health of individuals across the lifespan. Clinician Scientist | Speaker | Advisor | C-level | Sustainable Creator.
The development of healthy longevity needs investment. It was a true pleasure to be part of the #LongevityInvestors conference at the Le Grand Bellevue Gstaad organized by Dr. Tobias Reichmuth, Marc P. Bernegger and Lucia Kupcova. Serious investors, entrepreneurs (pitching start up innovation showcases - impressive!) and academics were intermingling from ‘second one’ shaping the future of our amazing field. Debates and serious business were mixed with sports and culinary excellence! Great to catch up with old friends and learning so much from the ones who recently entered the field! We greatly presented the Academy for Health & Lifespan Research and Healthy Longevity Medicine Society; Brian Kennedy, Nir Barzilai, Evelyne Bischof, MD, PhD! NUS Academy for Healthy Longevity

Academy members David Alison, Rafael de Cabo, and Luigi Ferrucci gathered for dinner to discuss emerging questions surrounding skeletal muscle mass in relation to GLP-1 agonist weight loss drugs and their impact on healthspan and lifespan. The conversation highlighted exciting new research directions, including studies on muscle mass changes and their broader implications for healthy aging. Looking forward to seeing where this critical work leads!
SKELETAL MUSCLE, GLP-1 AGONISTS, MITOCHONDRIA, HEALTHSPAN, AND LIFESPAN On a beautiful Friday Evening (Sept 20) at the Baltimore Inner Harbor, I had the privilege of dining with my friends and colleagues, Drs. Rafael de Cabo, Chief of the Translational Gerontology Branch at the National Institute on Aging (NIA), National Institutes of Health, and Luigi Ferrucci, Scientific Director at NIA. While we dined on some terrific tender lamb skeletal muscle at Lebanese Taverna ( https://lnkd.in/gSy6knKw ), we discussed the recent questions that have arisen around skeletal muscle mass as related to GLP-1-agonist-related weight loss drugs, healthspan, and lifespan. I have written previously on questions involving the effects of muscle mass ( https://lnkd.in/giyJpSRt; https://lnkd.in/g7QFSJBS; https://lnkd.in/gcWw3BeG ; https://lnkd.in/gx2Ghx5H; ) and further upcoming discussions will occur (e.g., https://lnkd.in/gF9RYCr5 ). Rafa will be initiating a new study in which he will compare the effects of assignment to GLP-1 agonist related drugs to caloric restriction in mice and study the differential effects on muscle mass conditional on total weight loss, and in turn the effects of muscle mass change on healthspan and lifespan. Luigi will be studying the role of mitochondria in this, his long-term interest: https://lnkd.in/gNFJuAPm . I am hoping that I may contribute to the statistical evaluation building on the methodologic insights I offered long ago here: video here: https://lnkd.in/g6HYGu99 in the section on testing for independent or preferential effects. How would you (if you would) study skeletal muscle mass changes and their effects on healthspan and lifespan in mice? Some who may wish to comment include: Daniel Smith, Caroline Apovian, Sam Chai, Ph.D., Raoul Manalac, Louis Aronne, Faris Zuraikat, Charles Mobbs, Vipin Arora, PhD, ASAF, Ken Mackie, Jeff Alberts, Dudley Lamming, Anna Thalacker-Mercer, Felipe Sierra, Nir Barzilai, Kevin C. Maki, PhD, Matt Kaeberlein, Debolina Ghosh, PhD, Padmini Rangamani, Kevin Hall, Mark Mattson, Sixtus Aguree, Ph.D., Deependra Thapa, Thirupathi Reddy Mokalla,PhD, Brian Kennedy, Zachariah Reitano, John Sorkin.

Congratulations to Academy member Cynthia Kenyon on receiving the prestigious Lord Cohen Medal, awarded only 16 times in the past 40 years! Kenyon's groundbreaking 1993 discovery that a single-gene mutation could double the lifespan of C. elegans revolutionized the study of aging. Her research revealed that aging is genetically controlled, with regulatory proteins coordinating gene networks that protect and repair cells. Kenyon’s work uncovered a universal hormone-signaling pathway influencing aging across species, including humans. Her contributions have reshaped our understanding of longevity and aging processes, making her a true pioneer in the field.
Congratulations to Cynthia Kenyon, Calico’s Vice President of Aging Research, for being awarded the Lord Cohen Medal, a prestigious honor recognizing leaders in the field of aging. Awarded by the British Society for Research on Aging (BSRA), the Medal has only been awarded 16 times in the past 40 years, and is given to recipients who’ve made outstanding contributions to aging research. As part of this recognition, Cynthia delivered the prize lecture at the BSRA Annual Scientific Meeting on September 5 at University of Birmingham. Titled “Genes and processes that control the rate of aging,” Cynthia's talk discussed her pioneering studies with C. elegans showing that the rate of aging is not immutable, as previously thought, but instead is plastic and under active genetic control by specific genes and hormones. Congratulations, Cynthia, on this well-deserved honor!
