Thank you to Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects for hosting our Design Tour of Berkeley Way Apartments and Hope Center last week! We were thrilled to be able to introduce this project to more of our members. The project grew out of a local need for housing and supportive services in the transit-rich downtown Berkeley area. Creating “an awesome Continuum of Housing integrated into the fabric of downtown community… a place to begin progress OUT of poverty and homelessness, projecting warmth, welcome, respect, dignity” are the project goals. This project demonstrates the city’s and non-profit partner’s commitment to creating a community based on social, financial and environmental resilience, equity, sustainability and integration.

Last week, our Architectural Community on the Environment (ACOTE) hosted their (Re)Launch Party - a networking event meant to both bolster our local community around sustainable design and reintroduce our ACOTE knowledge community to our membership. Join us for a construction tour of Mosswood Park’s new Community Center! The Park and Center will be inclusive of a diverse community of users, accessible, flexible in use, and thoughtfully designed. The new building will integrate thoughtfully within the park context; enhancing visibility, security and connectivity with adjacent uses, while preserving and protecting the verdant, pastoral setting and popular recreation amenities that the park provides. The new building project creates a “state-of-the art” facility that will foster community, wellness, recreation and learning. The building will meet programming, life safety and accessibility requirements within an efficient footprint, to minimize negative impact to the park experience and mature canopy trees. How did they arrive at their decisions, and what has that professional journey been like for each of them? This panel discussion will focus on the business side of equity: how creating value in an A+D (architecture + design) practice not only helps to attract and retain staff, but also, more importantly, provides paths to ownership. By creating equity and viable pathways for others to share the responsibilities and the rewards of owning and running a firm, founders can grow their business; plan for succession (and eventually, retirement), and/or leave behind a legacy.
