Exciting progress at San Francisco State University! Last week, EHDD held an office-wide tour of the West Grove Commons student housing construction site as the final touches are being applied in preparation for student move in later this month. To meet the project's tight timeline, our design-build team strategically separated the student housing scope from the health and dining center. This decision by SFSU, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., and EHDD allowed us to push forward with student housing while ensuring the dining and health center receives the attention it deserves. Atelier Ten participated in Urban Land Institute's recent Embodied Carbon Convening bringing together experts from KPF, EHDD, Gensler, and Thornton Tomasetti. Leanora Paniccia presented on the embodied carbon study for Vornado Realty Trust's Penn 2 redevelopment in New York City. A major takeaway from Penn 2 is that the reduction in up-front embodied carbon emissions vastly outweighed the emissions added for the renovation and the adaptive reuse of the foundation and structure eliminates. EHDD's design for the Siskiyou County Courthouse aims to present the justice system as a supportive, rather than punitive, presence in the community of Yreka, CA. Our approach was recently featured in Thomas Reuters' article about designing 21st century courts with access to justice and user experience in mind. The article explores how modern courthouses balance their historical function while accommodating newer systems that are more human-centered and focused on access. Excited to be part of 2024 Seattle Design Fest 🥳 EHDD's designers created the EPIC Raceway—a chance-based ball game illustrating the choices and challenges of the zero-carbon building design process for architects and engineers. EPIC, a web-based carbon reduction tool developed by EHDD, helps designers ask critical "what if" questions early in the design process, when data is scarce but the potential for emissions reduction is high. Last week, we explored how emissions reductions from going all-electric with PV vary from state to state. But what does it mean at the project level? We modeled the same multifamily building in four cities using EPIC, and here’s what we found: ⚡ Electrification is effective, but the impact differs by location. 🔥 In regions with dirtier grids like Miami, going all-electric reduces emissions by 4%, but adding PV cuts emissions by 40%. The combined strategy achieves a 44% reduction, making PV a worthwhile investment. 🌊 However, in areas with cleaner grids like Seattle, going all-electric reduces emissions by 25%. However, adding PV can actually increase whole-life carbon by 5%. Since the grid is already so clean thanks to hydroelectricity and wind power, the embodied carbon from solar panels outweighs the benefits, making it more sustainable to simply connect to the grid.
