🔈🎉Introducing our speakers, Dr. Perry Sweeper and Omari Souza for our virtual event, Shaping Shapes And Inspiring Change! Dr. Sweeper will be discussing “Design at an HBCU: The Morgan & AIGA Era”. The book illuminates the story of how the AIGA student chapter at Morgan State University, the first chapter at an Historically Black College & University (HBCU), was formed. Mr. Souza will be discussing highlights from “An Anthology of Blackness: The State of Black Design.” Souza will also guide the audience through a workshop entitled, “Mapping Positionality and Enhancing Empathy in Design” to help participants quickly understand their Positionality and how it influences their design process, fostering self-awareness and effective collaboration. For more on them, read below 👇! ______________________________________ 🎤 Dr. Perry Sweeper ( @Dr. Perry S. ) is a Professor of Practice in the Division of Experiential Learning and Interdisciplinary Studies at Morehouse College, with experience in design across various sectors, including education, government, and media. He has contributed to branding and marketing projects for notable organizations like The Washington Post, Vitamin Water, Heineken, and Nike. His recent book, *Design at an HBCU*, explores the graphic design curriculum at Morgan State University and its partnership with AIGA. Dr. Sweeper holds a Doctor of Science in Information and Interaction Design from the University of Baltimore and a Bachelor of Arts from Morgan State University. 🎙️ Omari Souza (Omari Souza ) is an Assistant Professor of Communication Design at the University of North Texas, with a diverse background that enriches his work. A first-generation American from the Bronx with Jamaican heritage, he has held key roles at organizations like VIBE magazine, Capital One, and CBS Radio. As co-host of the podcast “The Design of Business | The Business of Design,” he explores the influence of design within organizations. He also founded the State of Black Design conference to amplify the voices of Black designers and focuses his research on decolonizing design practices for a more inclusive industry.
