Alkemis is the World’s First Wellness Paint • #PaintYourWallsWithRockInsteadOfPlastic
About us
Alkemis is the world’s first wellness paint—bringing nature and design together to create healthier, more intentional interior spaces. As one of the only Cradle to Cradle Certified® paints in North America, Alkemis is ethically produced to help customers breathe easier and live more harmoniously. In addition to being C2C Certified®, Alkemis Paint is one of the only paint companies in the US that fulfills all five covenants of the Mindful Materials Common Materials Framework and the American Institute of Architects Materials Pledge, a nationwide initiative that has been signed by over 175 architectural firms. The products are contributory to LEED Certification Points, WELL Building Standard Points and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and are certified by Parsons Healthy Materials Lab, meeting their rigorous product evaluation requirements. Formulated using sustainable raw materials and clear quartz as its foundational layer, proprietary mixes of artist-quality pigments and earthen minerals (including hematite, goethite and chromite) are then added to create a high-performing interior paint that supports a holistic lifestyle. The omission of plasticizers means that Alkemis products are 100% water vapor-permeable; consequently, mold growth on walls decorated with Alkemis Paint is virtually impossible. Thanks to the groundbreaking mineral binder (which forms a permanent chemical bond between the paint and the underlying substrate), Alkemis Paint is as indestructible as stone and in most cases, will typically give 20+ years of satisfactory performance before repainting is necessary (far exceeding the life cycle of traditional latex or acrylic paints). Alkemis paints are unique in that they are free from synthetic pigments, hazardous organic pollutants (HAPs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), plasticizers/phthalates, preservatives, solvents, biocides, and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEs)—making the product safe for all living beings.

The custom color development process for Design Miami 2024 was collectively conceptualized by Grela Orihuela (Senior Vice President of Design Miami), Curatorial Director Glenn Adamson and Alkemis Paint co-founders—Maya Crowne & Price Latimer—to complement and harmonize Adamson’s curatorial narrative, Blue Sky. “We are thrilled and honored to collaborate again with Design Miami on its 20th edition and bold conceptual direction,” said Maya Crowne, Alkemis co-founder/CEO. “Each year, stepping into the fair feels like being transported to an entirely new realm, where the boundaries between art and design coalesce.” Alkemis Paint is proud to be the leading choice for beautiful and intentional exhibition design. 🎥: @bouboulena

There are easy ways to improve the health of our homes for us and our families. One of which is to stop directly exposing ourselves to PFAs, which accumulate (and never leave) our bodies. Though many of us haven't thought about the fact we are covering our homes with plastic paint, it's been right in front of our eyes for over 150 years. This logo says it all. Alkemis offers a better option for you, your family, and Mother Earth without sacrificing on aspirational aesthetics. The more you know.
Is this the world's most cringe-worthy logo? --Given the recent study modelling the extent of microplastics from paint in land and waterways and --given the assessment from Cousins et al. defining a breached planetary boundary for the synthetic substances referred to as PFAS, and --given that a recent Danish study identifies 22 of 30 tested paints with PFAS content, perhaps this logo does indeed reflect Sherwin-Williams' honesty in business value. (Links to all studies in comments.) Thanks to James Kitchin for reminding me of this one.

Read more about the environmental impact of paint: https://lnkd.in/gESshPp6 Typically, products do not contain environmental product declarations, so it is a struggle for consumers to grasp paint’s climate impact. Alkemis Paint is mineral-based, and is also one of the only Cradle to Cradle Certified® paints in North America. The Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard is the world’s most stringent, ambitious and actionable standard. “Mineral-based paints achieve a higher level of coverage with fewer layers, which is in part why their global warming potential impacts are less than paints with plastic binders.” — Martha Lewis, Head of Materials, Architect, Henning Larsen

This First-of-Its-Kind Paint Promotes Wellness. Alkemis Paint proves that pigment is the next frontier in conquering safe and sustainable formulations for responsible interior spaces. A proprietary amalgam containing a clear quartz base, artist-quality crystalline pigments, and earthen raw materials has earned the women-owned small business a Cradle to Cradle Certified designation for its architectural wellness paint—the world’s first, circa 2023. https://lnkd.in/edga93G2
