This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we highlight the Lower Sioux Indian Community, one of the smallest tribes in the country that is leading the national charge on an integrated hemp-lime operation for affordable, healthy housing. Over a decade ago, Earl Pendleton, former Tribal Council Vice President, recognized industrial hemp’s potential to create economic independence, address housing shortages, and utilize local, sustainable materials. For Pendleton, hemp could “solve a lot of the issues facing housing in tribal and low-income communities.” “It's definitely an avenue to explore when you consider that homes will be healthier. The walls will breathe, hemp will condition the air,” Pendelton says. Since 2016, the Lower Sioux have cultivated industrial hemp across 300 acres, eventually building housing prototypes using hemp-lime. In less than a year, they constructed three new houses and completed a retrofit, marking Minnesota’s first-ever “seed-to-wall” operation. This incredible work has earned the Lower Sioux national recognition. We proudly celebrate their important work and their recent feature in Patagonia Films, The Green Buffalo, which documents their hemp-lime building. You can support the Lower Sioux in their groundbreaking efforts to create healthier, sustainable housing - please consider donating here: https://lnkd.in/eGAKB9qG

From seed to fiber, every part of the flax plant can be made into usable materials - but HOW exactly does a plant transform into a textile-ready fiber? PA Flax Project took HML through traditional hand-processing methods that separate the long, golden flax fibers from unwanted plant material. Discover the journey from field to fabric and explore this ancient craft that is inspiring new creations at our 'Regeneration of Flax' Exhibition, opening September 30th! 🔗Exhibition details: https://lnkd.in/evuUW6Vi Special thanks to exhibition sponsors Duracryl Global Flooring, Forbo Flooring Systems, and Tuscarora Mills. #regenerationFLAX
