🌟 What an incredible journey we had at the Equity Reimagined Retreat! 🌟 From the moment we kicked off with our warm welcome reception, we felt the energy and excitement in the air! Discussing with CEO of Emtrain Janine Yancey 2025 DEIB Strategies in the current environments equipped leaders to become more innovative with the work. Next, Hearing the powerful discussion led by CFO of e.l.f. Beauty, Mandy Fields and the Gap's Head of Brand Enablement, Equality and Belonging Carrie Thomas sparked meaningful insights. Our guests eagerly scribbled notes in their Equity Reimagined notebooks, ready to take action! Tiffany D. Cross inspired us with her keynote on "Resileince in the Fight for Equity and Justice", followed by us, Allen and Unger Consulting, coaching leaders on "Leading in a Divided World". Closing with a heartfelt leadership discussion on "Finding Your Why" by Tia B. Coachman, MBA, SHRM-SCP , the CEO of Affrima Consultancy. We also enjoyed a rejuvenating yoga workshop to recharge our spirits before indulging in a delicious Celebration Dinner by the amazing Chef Alexia Grant of the Dallas Mavericks! I’m going to do my best to capture the essence of what it felt like being surrounded with professionals working to drive purposeful change in the world of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). Allen and Unger Consulting in partnership with the Alchemy Consulting Group hosted the Equity Reimagined Strategic Leadership Retreat which stood as a beacon of empowerment, bringing together like-minded individuals on a collective mission to keep the work of DEI alive. Not only did I make new professional connections, but I gained new, insightful strategies on how to navigate the complexities of the evolving DEI landscape. We exchanged best practices and received valuable tools and perspectives through dynamic roundtable discussions, insightful keynotes, and enlightening learning sessions geared to amplify and enrich our leadership journey. It was also an honor to moderate a fireside chat with the powerhouse Chief Financial Officer of E.L.F. BEAUTY, Mandy Fields. She shared a C-suite view of what it means to invest in equity, a business imperative for driving growth and customer acquisition. Her authenticity and commitment to furthering the advancement of diversity in business was refreshing and inspirational. There aren’t enough words to describe how awesome it felt to sit amongst a group of women who could speak volumes with a look, support with a smile, and simply encourage with a compliment. I walked away reinvigorated and excited to do the work of the work needed in this ongoing pursuit of equality and belonging. The Society of Human Resource Management's (SHRM) decision to move away from the concept of equity has raised questions within organizations. The essence of equity lies in ensuring that everyone has access to the same opportunities, resources, and advancement, without discrimination or preferential treatment. However, the shift towards D&I without a focus on equity raises concerns. Saying "we value your contributions equally, but we won’t compensate you equally" undermines the fundamental principles of equity, and ultimately hinders progress towards creating truly equitable workplaces. We kicked off our morning with coffee and led a powerful discussion for OpenSesame Liza Mucheru Wisner on Allen and Unger Consulting work in conflict resolution and restorative justice with some amazing DEI leaders! We discussed, "How to address conflict in a way that strengthens teams and organizations in a world of difference?" because we ALL know it's inevitable when humans are truly connecting with humans.
