Alliance for Feminist Movements
Non-profit Organizations
Our multi-stakeholder membership convenes, collaborates, & advocates for resourcing & support for feminist movements
About us
The Alliance for Feminist Movements is a collaborative multi-stakeholder initiative between governments, private philanthropy, feminist funds, and civil society organizations dedicated to: 1. Increasing and improving resources dedicated to supporting diverse feminist movements 2. Mobilizing partnerships and political support for diverse feminist movements The strength of the Alliance for Feminist Movements comes from bringing together a range of stakeholders to tackle issues on funding and political support for feminist movements that are bigger than any single donor-grantee relationship or sector. We act as facilitators, communicators, and educators in the feminist resourcing ecosystem. With our members we convene, collaborate and advocate for more and better resourcing for feminist movements. We do this by: - Ensuring that resourcing feminist movements features prominently in and around key events through collaborative actions across the Alliance’s stakeholder groups. - Using the Alliance as a platform for collaborative learning and action. - Convening Alliance members in strategic and collaborative dialogues, with a focus on ensuring stability in the resourcing ecosystem among existing donors and a long-term goal to bring in new donors. - Engaging with the Alliance membership in advance of and following key events on messaging and collective actions. The Alliance is guided by a Steering Group directly chosen by its members. Current Steering Group members include the governments of Canada and Malawi, the Ford Foundation, and Foundation for a Just Society, Women’s Fund Asia, Mama Cash, XOESE, Resurj, APWLD, and Mujeres Transformando. AWID as the Alliance’s fiscal sponsor has a non-voting seat on the Steering Group. The Alliance is not a project of AWID. Become a member today and unlock the power of collective action as we reshape how our movements are funded and supported.

"As this current analysis shows, in 2020, a year of massive social upheaval, feminist funds provided the kind of direct, agile, and movement-grounded funding they have long pioneered." It's great to see amazing groups like Women's Fund Asia African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) Urgent Action Fund-Africa Fondo Semillas Urgent Action Fund Latin America and the Caribbean and UHAI EASHRI Fondo de Mujeres del Sur recognized in this report and uplifted for their pioneering #feministfunding practices From the latest report by Human Rights Funders Network (HRFN) on their 2020 findings https://lnkd.in/dUtuwxf8

Must Read: Feminist Alchemy (Global Fund for Women): A Blueprint for Feminist Crisis Response. https://lnkd.in/d4ybNSDk. Special mention to Alliance for Feminist Movements' Co-Director Sandra Macías del Villar for being part of the amazing team of feminists who put this blueprint together. "Feminist organizations are often best placed to respond to crises, because they provide responsive on-the-ground support to the most marginalized and disenfranchised communities. Feminist organizations are often born out of crises and are already on the frontlines, ensuring that the basic needs of the most marginalized groups are met, weaving back social safety nets, and addressing the root causes of injustice. And yet, feminist organizations often receive the least support in crisis settings. Despite their critical work, feminist organizations receive a small fraction of humanitarian aid in times of crisis. In 2015, UN Women found that just 1% of funding allocated to fragile states (those most impacted by disasters) were distributed to women’s groups or ministries. Unfortunately this trend still remains. A 2021 report from Oxfam surveyed 222 women’s rights organizations and found that 60% experienced “a lack of funding or staff to maintain operations or respond to community needs. One third of women’s rights organizations reported being left out of conversations and policymaking decisions related to their country’s Covid-19 response and recovery efforts. Additionally, only a small percentage of humanitarian funding allocated for local organizations addresses gender."

Like every week, we want to ensure that we share the latest news, articles, reports and trends in #FeministFunding. This week, however, we would be remiss not to share news that has shaken and angered our peers, partners and allies with regard to the continued onslaught on the rights and dignity of women and girls across the world. From Afghanistan to India to Kenya to France, all of these cases are painful reminders of why the Alliance's members come together to support and #FundFeminists for movements to continue to carry out their urgent work. “Reimagining our role as advocates of funding justice, responsible for reconfiguring the unequal concentration of resources, is a powerful stance.” Sabina Basi in a beautiful piece for the Alliance magazine So much of what Sabina describes in this article is what drives us at the Alliance for Feminist Movements to #fundfeminists and push for more #feministfunding
“Grant makers and grant seekers are often doing the same ‘resource activism’ in difference contexts. When these relationships become values-aligned, we’re all able to move beyond transactional arrangements and superficial conversations to honest reflections that are a source of solidarity and strength. Then, we can build collective power to redistribute resources more equitably.” Writing for Alliance magazine, Sabina Basi shares her thoughts on a new approach to ‘fund seeking’ that prioritizes fairness and solidarity over competition and transactional relationships—an approach that resonates strongly with how we think about shifting power and resources to grassroots activists and movements at the Fund for Global Human Rights.

Why should we #FundFeminists? "Little progress on women’s rights would have been made without collective pressure and advocacy from feminists." According to Equal Measures 2030's 2024 Gender Index: - No country is on track to achieve gender equality by 2030. - Nearly 40% of countries are backsliding or stagnating on gender equality. - At current rates, a girl born today will have to wait until her 97th birthday to see global gender equality achieved.
