📢📢New Update on Putting Social Science to Work!💡💪 Last year Stanford Impact Labs invested in Al Roth and Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation to adapt a proven life-saving innovation (Kidney Exchange) to Brazil and India as models for their respective regions. Al Roth won a Nobel prize, in part, for his insights around matching donors so that more people can receive life-saving kidney transplants. Yet today, more than 100,000 people globally are stuck on waiting lists--and many of them will die while still waiting. An extraordinary encounter unfolded during an Uber ride in New Jersey between driver Tim Letts, 33, and passenger William Sumiel Jr., 73. Sumiel, who was undergoing dialysis and in need of a kidney transplant, shared his health struggles with Letts. Moved by Sumiel’s story, Letts, a U.S. Army veteran, felt inspired to help by offering to donate one of his kidneys. This was in October 2021. After tests confirmed that they were a match, Letts followed through on his commitment, and the successful transplant surgery took place in 2022. This remarkable act of kindness highlights the unexpected connections and profound impacts that can arise from simple human interactions. It is human service and heroism combined. 🥺 God made that connection. The amazing part of this is that both men who are from different generations and stock are the same matches for a kidney. Look at God! It really is not about black or white most times. Same with blood donation 🩸 it's about humanity, your DNA.
