  • 2024 has been a rollercoaster for the U.S. economy. We’ve witnessed a dynamic interplay of factors influencing economic growth, including fluctuations in employment rates, shifts in consumer spending, and changes in government policies. The first half of the year has seen both triumphs and challenges that have shaped our economic narrative. Join us on Friday, September 13th at 12:00 PM, where Dan North will look at some positives, including consumer spending, and a resilient labor market, and strong negatives, such as inflation, and give his insights as for what is next.

Flash: A critical material in the global supply chain is suddenly at risk. I have friends who were right in the path of hurricane Helene, and we have been trying to find a way to get to them. In looking at a Google map to try and find a path of open roads (there aren’t any) I noticed the town of Spruce Pine, North Carolina. Spruce Pine is one of the most important towns in the world. I had recently read about Spruce Pine in a book called “Material World” describing the six basic materials needed to build our world. Spruce Pine, population 2,900 is a critical link in the global supply chain. Spruce Pine has the two largest mines in the world containing ultrapure quartz (a few other countries have a little, but they’re dwarfed by Spruce Pine). It’s the only material in the world which can be used to make crucibles in which silicon wafers are made, and those wafers are made into silicon chips, semi-conductors, transistors, and then the electronic components of devices just like the one you are reading from right now. It’s a critical link in the manufacturing of virtually all electronics. Without quartz from Spruce Pine, you can’t maker silicon wafers – end of story. The two mines in Spruce Pine which produce that quartz have now been flooded by Hurricane Helene, and the train tracks to haul it away have been heavily damaged. Most manufacturers of electronics probably have some in storage, but it’s unknow. If Spruce Pine can’t produce that quartz for a few weeks, it could cause serious damage to the manufacturing of electronics, globally. In “Material World”, the author, Ed Conway writes, with an eerie prescience, ”What if something happened to those mines? What if say, the single road that winds down from them to the rest of the world was destroyed in a landslide? Short answer: it would not be pretty. ‘Here’s something scary‘ says one veteran of the sector ‘If you flew over the two mines in Spruce Pine with a crop duster loaded with a very particular powder, you would end the world’s production of semi-conductors and solar panels for six months.” This situation merits very close attention.
