Attention computer nerds: Many students, especially those with computer science backgrounds, wonder how they can contribute to the alternative protein space. Here's a great example: this recent study shows how technology skills can directly impact cultivated meat production! This study highlights how machine learning models are used to evaluate bioactive peptides—critical components for optimizing cell culture media in cultivated meat. Traditionally, these bioactive peptides were studied for health benefits like anti-diabetic or anti-cancer properties. Now, they are being applied to improve cell culture growth, a key element in scaling cultivated meat production. The research reviewed available machine learning tools that predict bioactivity relevant to cultivated meat, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions, which promote cellular growth. Interestingly, while there are over 50 tools for antimicrobial activity, very few target growth factors and cell signaling, which are crucial for cultivated meat optimization. The findings also reveal that many machine learning classifiers still have limitations, like sensitivity and specificity issues. So here are opportunities for computer scientists to refine these models. Your skills in tech and machine learning, AI, and CS can directly contribute to optimizing cell culture media and advancing the cultivated meat and alt protein industry. This is just one example of how diverse skill sets are essential to building a sustainable and ethical food system. https://lnkd.in/ggMngm8N #altproteins #cultivatedmeat #careers #sustainability #innovation #tech
