Plants and people are our thing. We’re the largest succulent and cactus grower in the world.

About us

Nestled in the hills of north San Diego County, Altman Plants is home to over 1,025 unique varieties of cacti and succulents. In 1975, Altman Plants was simply a backyard hobby for Ken and Deena Altman. Their nurturing care and passion for each individual plant set them apart and quickly grew the business to the industry front-runner it is today. Since those humble beginnings, with the help of a team of renowned plant breeders and dedicated staff, Altman Plants is now one of the largest nurseries in the country and the largest succulent grower in the world. We strive to provide high-quality living treasures, for collectors and retailers alike.

Updates

  • It began as a hobby in a Los Angeles backyard, a deeply curious and enthusiastic passion for plants shared by two people. In 1975 it blossomed into something more. We’re talking about Altman Plants and company co-founders Ken and Deena Altman and their decision to go all in on a hobby gone awry, in the best possible way, and begin offering their beautiful succulents and cacti to other plant lovers. This year, we at Altman Plants are celebrating the company’s 50th anniversary and 50 years of family ownership. Growing, breeding, and distributing #livingtreasures, from succulents and cacti to roses and hibiscus, to all manner of drought-tolerant shrubs and flowering annuals. Would you believe the Altmans didn’t even move out of their backyard and into their first nursery location until 1981? The company’s grown more than a bit since then — operating today from coast to coast and beyond — but that passion for plants still runs deep, now shared by thousands of team members. We want to thank each and every person who has purchased an Altman-grown plant. Here’s to an exciting, plant-filled 2025 and another 50 years of connecting over exceptionally beautiful, colorful, and cool plants. #50thAnniversary #horticulture #plantgrower #floriculture #goteam

  • (Post) holiday season cheers to these Altman Plants team members in the Lone Star State for helping ensure that less fortunate children in the Dallas-Fort Worth area had gifts to open this past holiday season. Regional Service Manager Shanda Boddie once again organized a drive to collect and drop off new, unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve program that has been making the holidays brighter for children for more than 75 years. For 2024, their fourth year, Shanda and the team did something new, joining toy-collecting forces to great success with Lazy Dog Bar & Restaurant's location in Plano. 📷: Lazy Dog GM David Krach and Asst. • Golden spiny globes dot some of the grounds at this Altman cactus & succulent production nursery. Echinocactus grusonii (golden barrel or mother-in-law’s cushion) is an incredibly attractive and durable cornerstone of our cactus mix. And an architecturally compelling, heat-loving must-have for a drought-tolerant succulent or mixed landscape.
