Highest standards, better outcomes. We are the largest professional organization of surgeons in the world.
About us
The American College of Surgeons has been dedicated to improving the care of the surgical patient and safeguarding standards of care for more than 110 years. With more than 90,000 members worldwide, 2,500 participating hospitals in our quality programs, and 50 million+ patient records tracked through our surgical registries, healing all with skill and trust remains our #1 focus. Membership opportunities are available for anyone in any stage of their surgical career. To be a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, or FACS, signifies that a surgeon’s education, training, professional competencies, qualifications, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation consistent with the high standards established and required by the College. In addition to Fellows in all surgical specialties and in all practice settings, residents, medical students, and surgical team members all have a place within the ACS, the House of Surgery™. Our robust quality improvement and surgical education programs can lead to greater access for patients, fewer complications, lower cost of care, and better outcomes. Our quality accreditation and verification programs, products, guidelines, and tools improve quality in trauma, cancer, breast disease, bariatrics, children's surgery, geriatric surgery, and overall surgical care. Catch us featured on Bloomberg Television tomorrow, 3/29 at 4:30 pm CT, in the new episode of 'The American Dream,' which highlights origin stories of some of the nation's most innovative organizations. Tune in to see Dr. Patricia Turner, Dr. Jeffrey Kerby, and Dr. Timothy Mullett share how the ACS has been defining quality surgical care, particularly in cancer and trauma, for more than 110 years. "When we think about going to see a doctor or going to a hospital now, we expect a certain standard. In 1913, that was not the case. The hospitals were not verified or certified in any particular way. So, all of that was the backdrop against which the ACS was founded.”

Surgeon advocacy begins at the local level, as evidenced by trauma surgeon and ACS Fellow Dr. John Maa, who helped his county enact an ordinance in the hopes of keeping e-bike riders out of the trauma bay. Don't forget to join us at the ACS Leadership and Advocacy Summit in two weeks, where you can join us in speaking to members of Congress and learning how to advocate at the local and national levels.

We recently had the opportunity to meet in Washington, DC, to talk about Advocacy for prehospital blood transfusions. The amount of support is growing, and this group spent all day in a room working to develop materials to help various stakeholders share the message with Legislators, Funders, Policymakers, Health Care Providers- anybody who is interested in decreasing death due to major bleeding. Thank you to the American College of Surgeons for hosting us and to Blood Centers of America (Bill Block) for providing food and lots of coffee!
