Dennis Dart, Managing Director, Western Operations, spotted this bear cub in a tree on the Oregon Coast. Mama Bear was spotted nearby, which serves as a great reminder to always keep a respectable distance. Although they may look curious and friendly, bears (and all other wildlife) don’t want hugs, pets, or friend requests from humans. Enjoy them from afar, and stay safe out there!

On October 15th and 16th, the Chehalis District hosted the Pacific Northwest Region's 2nd Annual Foresters Field Day. The Region gathered in Long Beach, WA, for a team dinner on October 15th, and on October 16th, the group toured a client's property near Naselle, WA, to look at and discuss recent forest management activities. This is an invaluable opportunity for each district to showcase their work and discuss forest management operations with the larger Region group. Not only did foresters attend, but other AFM team members, such as GIS analysts and accountants, attended as well. The team looks forward to this event again next year!

As the trees complete their process of shedding leaves, it may seem like that process was all for nothing. On the contrary! The leaves decompose and provide nutrients back to the soil, providing food for other important organisms that live on the forest floor. Additionally, the fallen leaves provide habitat for various species, including the Eastern box turtle, luna moths, ovenbirds, Eastern red bats, and more. The next time you’re in the forest, take note of the beautiful forest relationships happening around you and beneath your feet.

“Hey, you! Want to hang out?” No matter how friendly a black bear seems, it’s best to keep your distance. Keith Kinlaw, Forester in Elizabethtown, NC, spotted this curious bear while he was cruising for a client property inventory project. After they took note of each other, they peacefully went their separate ways.
