VISION: To be the foremost champion of geography for the benefit of society.
About us
Established in 1851, the American Geographical Society (AGS) is the oldest professional geographical organization in the United States. It is recognized world-wide as a pioneer in geographical research and education in Geography for over 170 years. The mission of AGS is to advance geographic knowledge and the recognition of its importance in the contemporary world. AGS promotes the use of geography in business, government, science, and education with a goal to enhance the nation’s geographic literacy so as to engender sound public policy, national security, and human well-being worldwide. AGS is the only organization focused on bringing together academics, business people, those who influence public policy (including leaders in local, state and federal government, not-for-profit organizations and the media), and the general public for the express purpose of furthering the understanding of the role of geography in our lives. AGS provides leadership to frame the national discussion of the growing importance of geography and geo-spatial tools. The Society maintains its headquarters in New York, New York.

#GeoBuizSummit | A fascinating #firesidechat with Dr. Christopher Tucker, Chairman and CEO of GeoRobotix Inc., and Brian McClendon, Senior Vice President of Engineering, Niantic, Inc. on the evolution of geospatial data. It was a trip down memory lane remembering the Pokémon Go phenomenon – 500M downloads in just 60 days! But beyond the viral success, it showcased the power of crowdsourced, bottom-up mapping. Imagine building a world map not just from satellites, but from the ground up, using data captured by everyday users. This "invisible map," as they called it, is being built with tools like Scaniverse, which allows anyone with a smartphone to create a 3D reconstruction of a location in just 60 seconds! This is unlocking incredible possibilities for visual positioning and a new understanding of our world. And the future? Large Geospatial Models. While Large Language Models have revolutionized text, the real world offers a vast, untapped data source. By combining raw geospatial data with powerful models, we can extract invaluable insights and uncover deeper truths about our constantly changing environment. Plus, the emphasis on open source and the idea that high-quality "seeded data" can improve the accuracy of lower-quality sensors is incredibly exciting. The future of geospatial intelligence is bright! #geospatial #mapping #augmentedreality #pokemongo #largemodels #AI #data #innovation #futureoftech #opensource #dataquality #technology

Sharing the video of my 5-minute talk on geographical tools in #BlueEconomy ("The Blue Economy: An Approach to Sustainable Ocean Management", https://lnkd.in/ethJPxfZ). The talk was part of the insightful two-day discussion at #Geography2050: Cooperation & Conflict in a Changing Climate, organized by the American Geographical Society and Columbia Climate School on the multidimensional impact of climate change on society and its spatial dynamics. Grateful to contribute to this conversation. Check out the video library, it's worth your time: https://lnkd.in/e55UUjGw

We ♥️ our Scholar-Interns! Thank you, Emma, for your presence on our team this Fall ‘24 and for all of your contributions. Your creativity and curiosity helped make such engaging geography education content for our wide audience of life-long learners!
I recently completed my role as a Scholar-Intern at American Geographical Society, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities I had during my time here! From learning how to write informative news bites with AGS's DailyGeo to putting together long-form, research-driven blog posts on Ubique and EthicalGeo, not a day went by where I did not learn and grow both professionally and as a creative. I explored various topics within global cultures, food, cartography, and the geospatial realm, creating social media content to spread awareness of and increase engagement in the vast and vital field of geography. Being a Scholar-Intern equipped me with critical skills to pursue careers in geography, environmental communications, and related professions. I want to thank all the inspiring people I met at AGS for their mentorship, support, and community. This experience has been invaluable at the beginning of my career, and I am so appreciative! I highly recommend this internship with AGS to any university students interested in geography! Here are the links to some of the pieces I had the wonderful opportunity to write: https://lnkd.in/eCkbw3fw https://lnkd.in/ehWHyxxa #internship #geography

Read Our Latest #EthicalGeo Blog by Christian Mey on Understanding #CongoBasin Conservation from the Frontline Perspective! The Congo Basin, encompassing over 1.3 million square miles (3.7 million sq km) across six Central African nations, is home to the world's second-largest tropical rainforest. As one of the world’s largest carbon sinks, the Congo Basin sequesters vast amounts of carbon dioxide, mitigating the impacts of climate change by stabilizing regional and global climates. Rangers, as protectors of this critical ecosystem, ensure that the forests remain intact and resilient against deforestation, illegal logging, and biodiversity loss. This article delves into the multifaceted struggles of Congo Basin rangers, emphasizing the urgent need for systemic reforms to support these frontline conservationists.
